Marist Wlax Tutors Elementary Students

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist women's lacrosse team spent its Tuesday afternoon tutoring elementary students at Nassau Elementary School in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The players were thrilled at the opportunity to give back to their community especially in the realm of education. Approximately half student-athletes from the team were in attendance.

"Today, we had the opportunity to give back to the community by helping children with their homework," senior tri-captain Carolyn Sumcizk (Syosset, N.Y.) said. "Their excitement when they successfully completed their work was extremely gratifying for all of us and it is always nice to go outside our current academic environment."

This project is just at its start as the Marist women's lacrosse team hopes to continue its services to the Nassau Elementary School in the future.

"Helping students with their homework and providing them with one-on-one attention where they need it most is a rewarding task," first year Head Coach Laura Campbell said. "The benefits of tutoring are unremarkable; it helps improve student's grades and it helps them to be more productive in the classroom."

The Marist women's lacrosse team will begin the 2009 season at Yale on February 21, 2009. On that day, the team will begin their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) title defense in program history.
