Yeatman Hoping to Transfer, Perhaps to North Carolina

As reported earlier, Notre Dame's Will Yeatman, who was suspended from the Irish football and lacrosse teams as a result of alcohol-related incidents, is hoping to leave the university and transfer to another school, possibly North Carolina.

According to an article in the South Bend Tribune, "on Dec. 5 Yeatman had a heart-to-heart talk with Irish head football coach Charlie Weis, asking for his release from his football scholarship to try to start over somewhere else. Weis, according to Yeatman, was extremely compassionate and supportive. And when Yeatman mentioned his No. 1 hopeful target was North Carolina — the school Weis and Yeatman's father, Dennis, talked him out of going to three years ago — Weis wished him well."

Yeatman faces hurdles, in particular Notre Dame policies, regarding a transfer. Although he could not play football until the fall of 2010 after a transfer because of NCAA rules, Yeatman could play lacrosse this spring. However, Notre Dame would have to grant the one-time transfer exemption, and it might decide not to do that if the new school appears on the Irish's upcoming schedule. As it happens, North Carolina is scheduled to play at Notre Dame on March 7.
