JHU Prospectus: Top Returning Players, 2009 Schedule

The Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team will open the 2009 season in exactly 63 days (Feb. 20). Years ending in "9" have been kind to JHU, which won national championships in 1899, 1909, 1919, 1949, 1959, 1969 and 1979 and played in one of the great all-time NCAA Championship games in 1989.

Top Returning Players

Steven Boyle A Jr. - Finished third on the team in scoring with 19 goals and 15 assists for 34 points last season • Now has career totals of 42 goals and 29 assists for 71 points • Honorable Mention USILA All-America as a freshman • First freshman attackman at JHU to earn All-America honors since 1992.

Brian Christopher M Sr. - Enters fourth season as a regular in JHU's midfield rotation • Totaled six goals and five assists for 11 points last season and has career totals of 29 goals and nine assists for 38 ponits.

Matt Dolente FO So. - Saw action in all 17 games last season as a faceoff specialist and won 53-of- 119 (.445) faceoffs with 27 ground balls, one goal and one assist • Finished seventh on the team with 27 GBs • Named Outstanding Midfielder at the 2008 ILF U-19 World Championships as he won 115-of-175 (.657) faceoffs in seven victories.

Matt Drenan D Sr. - Returned to action last season after missing the 2007 season with an injury • Played in all 17 games as JHU's primary long-stick middie in 2008 and had 22 ground balls on the year.

Michael Evans D Sr. - Co-captain • Earned Third Team USILA All-America honors last season after grabbing Honorable Mention honors as a sophomore • Earned a spot on the NCAA All-Tournament Team last season • Has started all 34 games in the last two years • Routinely draws the assignment of marking the opposition's top attackman.

Michael Gvozden G Jr. - Started all 17 games in goal last season and posted an 8.10 goals against average and a .598 save percentage • Played a school-record 1,007:01 in goal in 2008 and totaled 202 saves • 202 total saves rank as the fifth-highest single-season total in school history • Spectacular down the stretch as he allowed just 51 goals while posting 118 saves during the final nine games of the season (.736 save percentage) • Finished 17th in the nation in goals against average (8.10) and eighth in save percentage (.598) • Named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team.

Michael Kimmel M Jr. - Finished fourth on the team in scoring with 13 goals and 18 assists for 31 points last season • 18 assists were a team-high • Counts career totals of 36 goals and 25 assists for 61 points to his credit • Has 15 points in eight career NCAA Tournament games.

Andrew Miller DM Sr. - Co-captain • Enters fourth season as JHU's top short stick defensive midfielder • Has played in all 48 games during his career and has three goals, three assists and 78 ground balls.

2009 Schedule

SIENA • Feb. 20 • 6 pm • Homewood Field • Baltimore, MD
First meeting between Johns Hopkisns and Siena in men's lacrosse • Teams had three common opponents in 2008 - Loyola, Albany and Mount St. Mary's • JHU posted a 3-0 record against those three teams while Siena was 2-1.

PRINCETON • Feb. 28 • Noon • M&T Bank Stadium • Baltimore, MD
Johns Hopkins has won two straight and five of the last six against Princeton • The Blue Jays lead the all-time series, 54-24 • This will be the third straight year the teams meet at M&T Bank Stadium as part of the Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic.

UMBC • Mar. 3 • 7:30 pm • UMBC Stadium • Catonsville, MD
JHU picked up a hard-fought 10-8 win last season to run its alltime record to 6-0 against the Retrievers • JHU head coach Dave Pietramala played for UMBC coach Don Zimmerman at Johns Hopkins.
