BYU Wins Opener Against the University of Minnesota

(Rosemont, MN) -- The BYU men's lacrosse team opened the 2009 season with a 14-4 win over the University of Minnesota. The Cougars used a 6-0 opening quarter, led by Kent Mann's (Orem, UT) early hat trick, to put the game out of reach in the first game of the Chris Jenkins Invitational.

The game started quickly for the Cougars as freshman Chris Nash (Draper, UT) scored 15 seconds into the game off an assist from junior Elliot Grow (Salt Lake, UT). Mann then scored his first of four on the day to put the Cougars on the way to a 6-0 first quarter lead.

"He has the best hands in the MCLA and showed it tonight." said Junior Captain Elliot Grow said of Mann, "Not only does he score goals but he rides hard and completes the attack line."

The Gophers scored first in the second quarter on an extra man possession for their only goal of the first half, as BYU continued to push the lead further away from the host team. BYU led 8-1 at the break and were clearly in command.

"We were very happy with how it started, our offense was really playing well, defense was solid." said Assistant Coach Mark Tschaggany. "We really needed to work on our consistency though."

The Cougars used another six goal quarter, while holding the Gophers to just one of their own, to extend the lead to 14-2. The Cougars scored first on an unassisted goal from senior captain Steve Naegle (Pleasanton, CA). Nash finished up a four goal run for the Cougars before Alex Eckstein scored for the Gophers. The rest of the quarter was all Cougars as they rattled off 4 more goals.

"We didn't let them dodge inside us." said Junior midfielder Jeremy Rife "We were able to generate lots of fast breaks off of the rides and clears that led to some easy goals in transition. Britt Cone really played well tonight, just like he always does."

The Gophers won the last quarter 2-0 to bring the final score to 14-4.

The Cougars are back in action tomorrow as they take on #6 Minnesota Duluth in their second game of the Chris Jenkins Invitational Tournament.
