No. 2 Michigan Coasts by Arizona in MCLA Opener

San Diego, Calif. The pre-season #2 ranked University of Michigan Men's Lacrosse team opened their season with a win on Saturday afternoon in San Diego, defeating Arizona by a score of 14-3 at Torrey Pines High School. Michigan jumped out to an 11-0 half-time lead and never let the Lax Cats get into striking range.

Michigan opened the contest with a goal from junior midfielder Jordan Kirshner (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) just 45 seconds into the game, before adding their second tally under five minutes later after a missed shot was scooped up by junior attackman Kevin Zorovich (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa), who worked around to the front of the cage before firing low for the 2-0 lead.

The Wolverines extended the lead to 3-0 after a shot from the far right wing by junior midfielder Anthony Hrusovsky (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest). The first-quarter onslaught continued as junior attackman Josh Ein (Potomac, Md./Bullis) added his lone tally tight in on the right wing as Michigan closed out the first quarter scoring with a 4-0 lead.

Hrusovsky added his second goal two minutes into the second quarter on a shot from the left wing that snuck inside the far-side post. Senior captain Riley Kearns (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) scored just 23 seconds later after a turnover from the Arizona goaltender right outside his crease resulted in open net for the senior captain.

Kearns added his second at the 9:15 mark after dodging around the cage and firing from close on the left wing. Senior attackman Wes McGowan (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) added another just seven seconds later after a clean faceoff win and assist from junior faceoff specialist David Reinhard (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing).

Michigan kept up the pressure, scoring on their next possession after junior transfer Michael Bartomioli (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) scored his first Wolverine goal on an assist from Kearns. Sophomore attackman Trevor Yealy (Pittsburgh, Penn./Upper St. Claire) added his first of the game after scooping up a loose ball on the right wing, and dodging from the GLE before firing high for the 10-0 lead late in the first half. Yealy closed the first-half scoring with his second goal, this time on the transition as the Wolverines closed out a dominant first 30 minutes on the season.

Arizona came out firing in the third quarter, notching three unanswered goals in the first half of the third quarter, but senior Aaron Hodari (Bloomfield, Mich./Detroit Country Day) stopped the momentum coming out of a Wolverine timeout and Hrusovsky added his third of the game under two minutes later for the 13-3 lead after three quarters.

Junior midfielder Clark McIntyre (Little Silver, N.J./Rumson Fair Haven) opened up the scoring in the final frame, receiving a pass from junior midfielder Jamie Goldberg (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) on the right wing and firing high just outside the crease to extend the Wolverine lead to 11. The Wolverines' defense hunkered down in the final stretches of the game as Michigan walked away with a 14-3 win in its first regular season game.

Statistically, Michigan won every category. U-M outshot their opponent 48-15, and won the groundball battle, 76 to 34. The Wolverines were 17 of 20 on faceoffs, and finished 20 of 24 on clears, while riding UA to 13 for 32 totals. The Maize and Blue finished 0-3 on the man-up, while the Lax Cats scored once on two attempts.

The Wolverines will be back in action next week when they travel north to Santa Barbara to take on the Gauchos on Wednesday, February 25 at 7:00pm EST.
