Burton Reaches Century Mark in Win over Trine

Fourteen different players scored at least one goal and midway through the first quarter Brady Burton (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) netted his 100th career goal as the 15th ranked Big Red rolled to a 22-1 season-opening victory over Trine University at a chilly Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.

Despite having temperatures dip below 20 degrees in the second half more than 100 brave souls feared the cold to cheer on the Big Red in their 2009 lid-lifter. The starting offense put on quite a display as junior face-off specialist Connor Detjen (Winnetka, Ill./Loyola Academy) controlled possession and left the rest to the likes of Dan Maude (Wayne, Pa./Haverford School), Burton, Nate Hall (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and Emmett Jones (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy).

Denison took 32 shots in the first half and scored on 16 of those attempts to take a 16-1 lead into the intermission. The Big Red would tack on six unanswered goals in the second half to close out the 22-1 win.

Burton, who scored the 100th goal of his still young career with 8:32 to play in the first quarter would tack on four more goals to lead all scorers with five tallies. He also chipped in one assist and was efficient, netting those five goals on just five shots.

Maude tied Burton for the team lead in points with two goals and four assists. Second-year starting attack Jones finished with three goals and one helper while Hall finished with two goals, one assist and four ground balls.

Denison out-shot Trine 48-14 and ended with 31 ground balls compared to 14 for the Thunder. Detjen owned the circle taking 15-of-17 face-off's. For the game DU won 21-of-26 face-off attempts.

Junior Dan Wallace (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) got the start in cage for the Big Red and turned in four saves in 37 minutes. First-year Greg Shannon played 23 minutes highlighted by six saves.

Trine's lone goal was scored by JJ Griesinger off a feed from Jeremy Sherman in the first quarter.

In extra-man opportunities DU was 3-for-5 while Trine was 0-for-7.

Denison will hit the road for three straight starting on Saturday (Feb. 28 ) at Randolph-Macon.
