Saint Leo University Defeats St. Andrew

LAURINBURG, N.C. - Junior Joe Guerin (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) scored six goals to lead visiting Saint Leo University to a 13-6 non-conference men's victory over host St. Andrews Presbyterian College on Thursday afternoon at the Knights Lacrosse Field.

The Lions (1-1) pick up their first win of the season while the Knights (0-3) drop their third straight to start the year.

Senior Ethan Young (Hilliard, Ohio) once again took every face off for St. Andrews and for the third straight time he won the majority. Young was 12-for-22 on face offs to give the Knights several scoring chances as St. Andrews took more shots in the game, 39-38. However, the Knights struggled to put their shots on frame as 22 shot attempt never made it on goal sailing high, wide, or being blocked.

Saint Leo sophomore goalkeeper David Erdman (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) made 11 saves when the Knights did put a shot on goal for his first victory of the season. Erdman (1-1) and the Lions defense kept SAPC off the scoreboard for the final 21 minutes en route to the seven-goal victory.

Senior Kyle Loda (Vienna, Va.) had a team-high two goals for the Royal Blue & White. Freshman DJ Zymkowitz (Pompano Beach, Fla.) scored his first collegiate goal. The sophomore trio of Nick Lewnes (Arnold, Md.), Ryan Hoover (Arnold, Md.), and Ryan Hauswirth (Crownsville, Md.) accounted for the Knights other goals.

Junior Kyle Carnaggio (Pasadena, Md.) had a pair of assists and sophomore Fred Parsons (Glen Burnie, Md.) handed out one assist. Senior defender TJ Dacey (Round Hill, Va.) picked up a game-high seven ground balls.

Sophomore netminder Patrick Wade (West Windsor, N.J.) was charged with the loss in his first start of the season. Wade (0-1) made a season-high 13 saves but allowed 13 goals.

Saint Leo out scored SAPC in every quarter including matching 3-2 totals in the first two periods to take a 6-4 lead at halftime. The Lions then pulled away with a 4-2 third quarter and a 3-0 fourth quarter.

Junior Kyle Marceau (Concord, N.H.) set up most of the Lions offense with a game-high five assists. Marceau had the feed on three of Guerin's goals and assisted on both of senior Benjamin Brigham's (Scituate, Mass.) goals. Senior Ryan Pomonio (Garden City, N.Y.) found the back of the net twice. Brigham and Pomonio both finished with three points each adding an assist.

Senior Chris Storrie (Syracuse, N.Y.) chipped in with one goal and one assist. The Lions other goals came off the sticks of sophomore Evan Mills (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and senior Mark Dargon (Newton, Mass.). Junior Ryan Groat (Castle Rock, Colo.) and sophomore Mike Del Buono (Southington, Conn.) both won five face offs for the visitors.

SAPC held a slight 37-33 ground ball edge. Both teams were very successful on clearing attempts with the Knights converting 21-of-23 tries and Saint Leo going 26-of-29. St. Andrews was 2-for-5 on extra-man opportunities and the Lions were 1-for-4.

St. Andrews wraps up a four-game home stand on Monday when they host No. 4 Mercyhurst College at 2:00 p.m. (NOTE: Game time was originally 1:00 p.m. but was moved back an hour for travel).
