Ursinus Is First Team in All Divisions to Win 500 Games
ST. DAVIDS, PA. – After Eastern tied the score at 1-all, Ursinus scored seven straight goals as the Bears (1-0) routed the Eagles (0-1) 16-6 Friday afternoon in non-conference women's lacrosse action.
More importantly, the season-opening win gave the Ursinus program win number 500. The Bears are the first team in all three NCAA divisions, to achieve that win total and now stand at 500-160-12 as a program all-time.
"We would not have achieved this mark without the hard work and dedication of all the players who are apart of our program's history," said Ursinus head coach Erin Stroble, who played for Ursinus herself. "We look forward to continuing the tradition here at Ursinus."
Three players recorded three goals in the game, with junior midfielder Elizabeth Cannon, sophomore attack Lindsay Urban and freshman midfielder Kristen Wampole each hitting three goals. Senior midfielder Lisa Clark added in two, while junior midfielder Elizabeth Cannon helped out with four assists. Urban had three assists as well.
Wampole scored the first goal of the game just 2:45 win on an assist from Clark. Following a goal from Eastern's Grace Griffith which tied the score at 1-all with 25:15 left, Clark then scored two goals and the rout was on. All seven goals came in a span of 9:08.
Eastern would get no closer than six goals the rest of the way, netting two goals before the half. At the start of the second half, Cannon scored back-to-back goals at 29:14 and 26:34 to put the game out of reach.
Defensively, Ursinus forced 20 Eagle turnovers. Freshman midfielder Kim Peifer had three caused turnovers for the Bears, and five draw controls. In goal, junior Alex McBride made nine saves in 60 minutes of work.
Ursinus will take on Vassar in sunny Florida on Tuesday, March 10.
