Guilford Drops Contest to Red Dragons
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Freshman attackman Blair Hanson (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) scored three goals in visiting Oneonta State's 13-6 nonconference men's lacrosse victory at Guilford College Saturday. The Red Dragons (1-1) jumped out to an 8-1 second-quarter lead and never trailed on a rainy and windy day in the Armfield Athletic Center.
Senior attackman Dennis Headrick (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) added two goals and two assists for Oneonta. He was one of eight different Oneonta State goal scorers in the game's opening 25 minutes. Senior midfielder Troy Lapore's (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) tally with 10:28 left in the second quarter capped the 8-1 outburst and helped the guests to a 10-4 halftime lead.
The Quakers (0-2) twice trimmed the deficit to five goals in the third quarter, the last time on senior midfielder Matt Meriwether's (Richmond, Va./Tandem Friends) tally with 9:38 left in the period. Headrick scored his second goal to open the fourth-quarter scoring and then set up Hanson's third tally, which provided the game's final margin.
Oneonta managed a 37-33 edge in shots and got 11 saves from senior goalie Nick Murray (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon), who also had a team-best six ground balls. Lepore added four points with his goal and three assists. Sophomore attacker Ryan Waibel (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) contributed two goals and one assist.
Meriwether and freshman Daniel Dowd (Friendship, Md./Southern) both scored twice for Guilford. Senior defender Gates Benson (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) caused three turnovers and picked up eight ground balls, both game highs. Freshman Ryan Walsh (Abington, Mass./Abington) and sophomore Mark Guillen (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) split time in goal with Walsh making six of the Quakers' nine saves in the first half.
Guilford returns to action Wednesday (3/2) afternoon against visiting Elizabethtown College at 4:00 p.m. Oneonta State returns to New York for a 4:00 p.m. contest at nationally ranked Ithaca College.
