Baer, McDonald Lead McDaniel Past Goucher
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Brittany Baer (Westminster, Md./Westminster) tallied five goals and two assists while Lindsey McDonald (Germantown, Md./Damascus) added three goals and five assists to lead McDaniel to a 16-6 victory over Goucher in the women's lacrosse opener for both teams on Saturday.
Colleen Cole led the Gophers (0-1) with a hat trick of her own.
The Green Terror (1-0) ran off a string six straight goals to turn a 2-1 advantage into an 8-1 lead with 13:48 to play in the opening half.
After Sarah Mintz (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) finished a Baer feed 46 seconds into the game, Baer scored a goal of her own 25 seconds later off a McDonald helper.
Cindy Villarreal made it a 2-1 game with 22:41 showing in the first half before Baer hit a free-position goal nearly two minutes later to spark the 6-0 run.
Baer finished with three goals while McDonald had three assists during the 9-minute, 57-second span.
Cole broke up the barrage with a solo run at the 11:26 mark before Kelly Scheler (Forest Hill, Md./C. Milton Wright) and Sandy Okun traded markers in the final 10:46 of the half to make it 9-3 at the break.
Mintz started the second half the same way she started the first half, only this time it was off a McDonald assist 1:19 into the stanza.
Cole answered 1 minute, 15 seconds later before McDonald finished a solo run to ignite another six-goal flurry to secure the victory.
McDonald tallied all three of her goals during the stretch while Baer had a goal and an assist.
Cole and Okun each tallied in the final 4:58 to set the final margin.
Baer added five draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers to her seven-point day. As a team, McDaniel won 16 draw controls to Goucher's seven and finished with a 33-29 edge in shots.
The Green Terror returns to action at Messiah on Wednesday. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
