Presbyterian Falls to St. Mary's in Shortened Game
CLINTON, S.C. – After 48:26 of elapsed playing time, the Sunday afternoon match between PC and St. Mary's (Calif.) was called for bad weather and the Gaels earned a 15-6 victory over the Blue Hose.
Freshman Katie Prisco (West Babylon, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) led PC in scoring with a pair of goals in the first half, while junior Jordan Newberry (Atlanta, Ga./North Springs H.S.) dished out two assists on the afternoon.
St. Mary's (1-3) established an early lead, scoring three goals in the first three minutes of the contest. Junior midfielder Brittni Dulaney (Rome, Ga./Darlington School) netted her sixth goal of the season two minutes later to put the Blue Hose on the board. St. Mary's responded with a four-goal run which Prisco halted with a score of her own at the 14:17 mark. After the Gaels added another pair of scores, Prisco capitalized on a free position opportunity to make it 9-3 with 6:55 remaining in the first half.
The Gaels finished the half the same way they started it, with a three-goal streak to enter the second half with a 12-3 advantage.
Freshman attacker Marie-Lisette Dimitrew (Greenville, S.C./Eastside H.S.) opened the second half with a goal off a pass by Newberry three minutes into the period. St. Mary's scored twice more to put the team ahead 14-4 at 22:53. On a PC free position attempt at 19:13, Newberry passed the ball off to freshman Kirstin Stenoien (Houston, Texas/Lutheran H.S.) who was waiting at the left side of the cage and snuck past Gaels' goalkeeper Hilary Gardner. Stenoien's goal stopped the continuous clock and put PC within nine (14-5).
The Blue Hose defense held St. Mary's scoreless for over four minutes before Megan Wehe found the back of the PC net to stretch the Gaels' lead back to ten with 16:10 on the clock. Junior midfielder Jenna Handshoe (Greenville, S.C./J.L. Mann H.S.) netted the final goal of the game at 15:25 and the match was called four minutes later due to rain contributing to poor playing conditions.
The Gaels outshot the Blue Hose 39-18 on Sunday. Junior Erin McBurnette stepped in goal for PC and made 15 saves. Gardner stopped eight shots for the Gaels.
The teams each won eight draw controls in the first half and Prisco won five of PC's 10 total draw controls on the afternoon. Dulaney scooped up a game-high six ground balls while Woodis and McBurnette each caused turnovers.
PC (1-3) will head south for warmer weather where the Blue Hose will play St. Bonaventure at a neutral location in St. Petersburg, Fla. on Mar. 5 at noon.
