Victory! Wagner Tops Presbyterian, Snaps 48-Game Streak

Staten Island, NY - Senior attack Evan Shull (Port Jefferson Station, NY/ Comsewogur) fired home four goals, junior midfielder Pete Blackmer (Marcellus, NY/ Marcellus) and freshman midfielder John Hird (Phoenixville, PA/ Shipley School) added two goals apiece as the Wagner College men's lacrosse team ended a 48-game losing streak with a 12-7 victory over Presbyterian.

For the Seahawks, who are now 1-3 on the season, it marks their first victory since an 11-6 win over Robert Morris on May 1, 2005. Head Coach Jason Rife, who took over the program prior to last season, was beaming with pride afterwards.

"All of the credit goes to the guys in the rectangle," said Rife who has know his share of success as a player at the University of Massachusetts and, most recently, as an assistant at Bryant University. "This is the deserved result of a hard work and dedication. Presbyterian is a team that almost beat Air Force, lost to VMI by only a 9-87 score. This is a heck of a win for our guys and they deserve all the credit.

"Now, we go back to work," he added. "My job is to continue to instill them whatever knowledge and desire I can."

Freshman goalie Peter Rubin (East Rockaway, NY/ East Rockaway) saved six shots for the Seahawks who are next in action on Sunday. March 8 when they host Bellarmine.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Presbyterian College men's lacrosse counteracted a 4-0 scoring run by Wagner with a four-goal streak of its own to tie the game at halftime. The Seahawks took the upper hand in the second half, however, eventually earning a 12-7 victory over the Blue Hose.

Freshman attacker Drake Peterson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mariemont H.S.) led PC with three points off a pair of goals and an assist. Junior midfielder Andrew Athens (Huntingtown, Md./Robert Morris University) also contributed two goals.

Wagner (1-2) scored early and often in the first period, jumping to a 4-0 lead. Athens netted PC's first goal with 1:17 left in the first quarter. The Blue Hose dominated the second period, outscoring the Seahawks 3-0. Peterson scored the first goal less than two minutes into the period. Freshman Clay Patchen (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prepatory School) found the back of the net at the 8:41 mark after senior Chris Williams (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Socastee H.S.) caused a Wagner turnover.

Sophomore midfielder Cory Stemshorn (Greenville, S.C./Greenville H.S.) scored the tying goal with 5:25 remaining on the clock off a dish by Peterson. Neither team scored in the final five and a half minutes and the teams entered halftime tied at four.

Wagner recovered from its 16-minute scoring drought as the Seahwaks won the faceoff at the start of the third period and took the ball straight to the net, taking a 5-4 lead 13 seconds into the third period. They repeated the performance just over a minute later to stretch its lead to two goals.

The Blue Hose pulled within one as Athens found the back of the net with 12:46 remaining in the third period. The two teams battled back and forth throughout the rest of the third period, with neither team scoring.
