Saint Michael's Crushes Dominican College in Opener
Colchester, VT (3/7/09) -- The Dominican College men's lacrosse team dropped their 2009 season opener to host Saint Michael's College, 13-1 this afternoon on Duffy Field at Doc Jacobs Complex.
For Saint Michael's, senior Jake Previte (Cohasset, MA) tallied three goals and one assist, while freshman Andrew Buccellato (Glen Rock, NJ) scored three goals in his collegiate debut. Junior Charlie Niznansky (Fairfield, CT) added a pair of goals for the Purple Knights, while senior Bryan Zaremba (Manhasset, NY) recorded a goal and two assists. Junior Zach Jandl (Brookline, NH) and freshman Ian O'Brien (Gansevoort, NY) combined to stop three shots in net as Saint Michael's held a commanding 57-11 advantage in shots.
For Dominican, sophomore Andrew Rendine (River Edge, NJ) scored off of an assist from classmate Jesse Peterson (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan). Sophomore Brendan Bonacum (Port Jefferson Station, NY) stopped 18 shots in net in the loss.
Saint Michael's scored just seven seconds into the contest to take a lead it would not relinquish, and led 3-0 after one period.
The Chargers scored their lone goal 47 seconds into the second quarter to cut their deficit to 3-1, but the Purple Knights scored twice later in the period to open up a 5-1 lead at halftime.
Saint Michael's sealed the victory with four goals in the third quarter, and four more fourth-period goals, as Saint Michael's won 12 of the games' 17 faceoffs to help hold off the visitors.
With the victory Saint Michael's improves to 1-0 overall, while Dominican falls to 0-1.
Dominican is back in action next Thursday when they travel to Saint Andrews Presbyterian for a 3:30 non-conference game.
