Sheridan Nets 150th as No. 9 Colby Edges Williams
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Colby College's Kate Sheridan reached 150 career goals as the Mules opened up the season with a 9-8 victory over Williams College in New England Small College Athletic Conference women's lacrosse play Saturday.
Sheridan, a three-time All-American, had three goals and one assist for the defending NESCAC champions. Sheridan has 150 goals and 63 assists for 213 career points. She is just nine points away from tying Colby's all-time scoring leader Ally King '03 (222 points) and 17 goals shy of reaching all-time goal scoring leader Margaret Mauran '91 (167).
Kathleen Kramer and Caroline Atwater each had two goals for Colby (1-0, 1-0 NESCAC). Amy Campbell finished with one goal and one assist, while first-year midfielder Claire Donegan scored her first collegiate goal.
Williams scored the first goal of the contest, but the Mules went on a 6-0 scoring run and held the Ephs without a goal for about 20 minutes. The Mules had three of their six free position goals during that scoring run. Sheridan had two goals, Campbell had a goal and an assist, and the Mules received one goal apiece from Kramer, Atwater, and Donegan.
Colby scored two of the opening three goals of the second half to take an 8-4 lead with 18:59 to play. Kramer and Sheridan each scored on free position shots. The Mules were 6-for-11 on free position opportunities and Williams was 2-for-7.
Williams made it interesting by scoring the next three goals to cut the lead to 8-7. Britt Spackman's second goal of the game came with 15:36 to play and cut the margin to one.
Atwater, though, scored just 30 seconds later on yet another free position shot to give the Mules an important goal. Williams did tally with 8:43 to play, but the Mules held firm the rest of the way.
Sarah Warnke made nine saves in goal for Colby, which will have its home opener next Saturday against Tufts University at noon.
