Bentley Drops Opener to No. 3 C.W. Post
WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley University dropped the opening game to its 2009 men's lacrosse season 18-7 to No. 3 C.W. Post Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers, who were playing in their fourth game already, were led by senior Greg Cerar's five goals. Freshman Brendan Grant (Walpole, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) had a team-high two goals for the Falcons.
The Pioneers wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard, as Cerar scored his first of the game just 1:05 into the first quarter. A goal by junior Joe Meo put the visitors up 2-0 with 10:21 gone in the period, and that was followed by a tally from freshman Eddie Plompen a little more than three minutes later.
C.W. Post scored the first of its five man-up goals at the 6:32 mark from senior Dave Loftus, making the score 4-0. The Pioneers took advantage of their man-up opportunities all game, going 5-7.
After another Post goal made it 5-0, junior Wyatt Couture (South Hadley, Mass./Avon Old Farms) scored Bentley's first of the game with 1:44 left in the first quarter.
The visitors went into halftime with a 12-1 lead, but Bentley tied Post 6-6 in the second half, with five of those goals coming in the fourth quarter.
Five different players scored for the Falcons in the second half, with Grant scoring his two in the final 2:11 of the game. Junior Kevin Gould (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) assisted on both of those goals and scored one of his own early in the fourth quarter for a team-high three points.
Senior Daniel Scuilla made 10 saves for his fourth win of the season. Bentley returns to the field a week from Saturday at Adelphi at 7:00 p.m.

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (March 7, 2009) – Senior attacker Greg Cerar (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) scored five goals and added an assist to lead third-ranked C.W. Post over Bentley University, 18-7, in a non-conference men's lacrosse tilt Saturday afternoon.
The win improves C.W. Post to 4-0 this season while Bentley opens the season with its first loss.
Senior attacker Dave Loftus (Merrick, N.Y.) added three goals while sophomore attacker Nicholas Coric (Walnut Creek, N.Y.) registered three assists.
Cerar scored the game's first goal at 13:55 as the Pioneers fired in five unanswered goals to open the first quarter. Bentley scored its first goal when Wyatt Couture found the back of the net on a feed from Steve Murray.
The Pioneers continued to run away with the game and opened up the second quarter with seven unanswered goals – three scored by Cerar.
The Falcons registered their goal of the game in the third quarter when Steven Moulton scored on a man up with Andy Curtis assisting on the play. C.W. Post answered back with four more goals to lead 16-2 at the end of the third.
Freshman attacker Ralph Pepe (East Quogue, N.Y.) and redshirt freshman attacker Thomas Giordano (Garden City, N.Y.) each scored a goal in the fourth.
Bentley recorded the game's last four goals, including two from the battery of Brendon Grant and Kevin Gould.
C.W. Post outshot Bentley 35-25 and held a 22-17 advantage in ground balls. Senior goalkeeper Daniel Sciulla (Merrick, N.Y.) made 10 stops in goal to preserve the win.
C.W. Post resumes action when it heads south to Orlando, Fla., for a two-game set against Queens College of North Carolina (March 11) and Saint Michael's College (March 14).
