Tars Sail Past Royals
WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 10, 2009) - Six Tars scored on the way to an 11-7 victory over the Queens University of Charlotte Royals on Tuesday morning. With the win, the Tars advance to 3-1, while Queens drops to 2-4 on the season.
Leading Rollins was junior midfielder Marissa Giannerini and freshman midfielder Cat Kelley with three goals apiece. Bizzie Durell fired two shots between the pipes, while sophomore duo Liz Connelly and Katy Tyszko tallied one goal and one assist each. Rounding out the morning were freshmen Steph Wiedenhofer and Tori Snow with one assist.
Senior goalie Lisa Weber walked away from the day with a 50 percent save percentage after grabbing seven saves and seeing 14 shots on goal. Leading the Tars in ground balls was Mallory Surpless with six, while Laura Wilkin and Snow followed close behind with five. Wilkin, Snow, and Gabi Lombardi all had big days in the defensive end as they each caused three turnovers for the Tars on the way to the team's steady overtake of Queens.
Queens opened up with a two goal lead to kick off the game, holding the Tars scoreless until Surpless grabbed an assist from Snow to put the Tars up on the board with 7:08 remaining in the first half. Kelley grabbed the equalizer 30 seconds later to bring the score to 2-2 with 6:36 to go, but Queens answered back with two goals of their own to close out the half leading by a score of 4-2.
Rollins burst into the second half with a quick goal from Giannerini less than a minute in, followed by Kelley a minute later to notch her second game-tying goal of the morning. Queens University's Kelley Duffey answered back with a shot of her own fired into the back of the cage to pull the Royals ahead 5-4, but Giannerini and Kelley teamed up once more to go one-for-one and retake the lead with a score of 6-5.
Duffey retaliated again with an unassisted goal to even-out the score at six, but Rollins found success on two more goals to pull ahead for their first two-point lead of the contest with 20:28 remaining in second half play.
The Royals gained one more point from midfielder Kelley Wrightson with 13:27 left on the clock to pull back to within one point of the Tars, but Rollins went on to suppress their opponent's offense in the final 12 minutes of the game as they notched three more goals to pull ahead to a final four goal lead to close out the day.
After falling behind 4-2 at the half, the Tars outscored their opponent 9-3 in the second half to close out their third victory of the season. Rollins led in all areas of the field as they out-shot Queens 40-14, led in ground balls 44-28, took the lead in draw controls 12-8, and caused 15 turnovers.
The Rollins women's lacrosse team will be back in action on Monday, March 16, when they take to the field against Saint Michael's in a 7:00 p.m. showdown in Winter Park.
