Quick Start Propels RIT over Scranton

ROCHESTER, N.Y.-Junior midfielder Adam Lehmann (Rochester, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) scored four of his game-high five goals in the first half to spark the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) past the University of Scranton, 15-10, in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon.

The Tigers won seven of nine of 15 face-offs and out-shot the Royals, 28-8, in the first half to build up a 10-3 lead by intermission. For the game, R.I.T. won 19 of 28 face-offs, held a 47-20 advantage in shots, and posted a 51-26 margin in ground balls. With the win, the Tigers remain undefeated at 4-0.

Scranton, which dropped its third straight game to fall to 1-4, was led by senior attacker Nick Youngstrom (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) with four goals, sophomore attacker Kyle Frank (Glen Arm, Md./Boys' Latin) added three, and freshman attacker Robby Napp (Spring Lake, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) contributed two goals and an assist. The Royals also received a goal from sophomore midfielder Patrick Cefalu (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) and a game-high five assists from sophomore midfielder Keenan Dowd (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic).

The Royals battled back from an early 3-0 deficit on goals by Youngstrom, Napp and Frank during a five-minute span in the first period to tie it up at 3-3. The Tigers then scored eight unanswered goals until Youngstrom scored back-to-back goals at the 7:02 and 2:56 marks of the third period to cut the gap to 12-5.

After RIT countered with back-to-back goals by sophomore attacker Tanner King (Virginia Beach, Va./Corning East) and Lehmann to extend the lead to 14-5 early in the fourth period. The Royals out-scored the Tigers, 5-1 in the final nine minutes of the game.

Sophomore Jeremy Dowiak (Hackettstown, N.J./West Morris) and freshman Colin Cable (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) split time in goal for the Royals, combining for 14 saves, while Kevin Rattigan (Chicago, Ill./Western Reserve Academy) and Robert Tonnessen (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) combine to stop six shots for the Tigers.

The Royals will return to action this Saturday, March 14, against Cazenovia College at Fitzpatrick Field beginning at 3:00 p.m.
