Dolphins Score Comeback Win Over Hendrix

Yonkers, N.Y. Senior captain Billy Downes (Barkhamsted, Conn.) scored with 9:22 remaining in the fourth quarter to give the College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Lacrosse squad a 6-5 come-from-behind victory over Hendrix (Ark.) on Thursday night. Freshman Rowan Frederick (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also had a hand in the victory as he scored half of the Mount's goals in the contest.

After jumping in front 1-0 on Frederick's first of the night at the 10:15 mark of the first stanza, the Warriors responded with three straight goals, before the Mount's Ryan O'Dougherty (Morristown, N.J.) buried a feed from Mike Shea (Congers, N.Y.) with eight seconds left before the half, to the cut the deficit to 3-2 at the intermission.

John McDonnell of Hendrix gave the Warriors back their two goal cushion at 11:08 of the third, before the Mount scored three straight to close out the period. Frederick scored twice inside of a two minute span and Brian Zambri (Brooklyn, N.Y.) pushed the Mount ahead 5-4 with 3:30 left in the third quarter.

Hendrix would not go away however, and after Tim Wojick scored his second goal of the evening the game was again tied, this time at five goals apiece. Just under three minutes later, Downes closed out the scoring in the game when he took a feed from Shea and found the back of the cage to send the Dolphins to their second straight win.

Frederick netted his second straight three goal game and Shea picked up assist numbers four and five in the winning effort. Frederick led the Dolphins with eight groundballs in the contest, while Cavan Valance (Glen Cove, N.Y.), Ken Valentine (Centereach, N.Y.) and O'Doughtery all scooped five.

Mike Nuzzi (Westbury, N.Y.) improved his record to 2-1 in the cage after making seven saves and intercepting a pass late in the contest with the Dolphins clinging to a one goal lead. His counterpart from Hendrix, Keith Clemens, made nine stops and also picked up five groundballs.

Overall in the game, Hendrix won 10 of the 14 face-offs taken and picked up 44 groundballs to 40 for the Mount. The Dolphins, however, took advantage of their man up opportunities, going 3-6. Hendrix did not convert in the contest, going 0-8 with the extra man.

The win moves Mount Saint Vincent to 2-1 overall on the season. The Dolphins will be back in action again on Saturday when they host the club team from CCNY. Face-off at Tibbetts Brook Park is set for 3:30 p.m.
