Cervenka Leads Wesley in Squeaker over Moravian

DOVER, Del. - Leslie Cervenka (Newtown, Pa./Pennsbury) set Wesley College's career assist record, but it was her goal with 35 seconds left that lifted the Wolverines to a 12-11 win over visiting Moravian.

The Greyhounds (0-3) had come from two goals down to tie the game at 11-11 after goals by Maureen Helfers with 2:38 left and Georgia Castellano just over a minute later.

But after Moravian won the ensuing draw, a potential game-winning shot by Paige Warbrick sailed wide and Wesley (4-5) was able to regain possession. The Wolverines cleared the ball and Cervenka took a pass behind the goal, circled around and spun back for the game-winner.

Earlier in the game, the senior set Wesley's career assist record when she fed Alyssa Prudente (Hereford, Md./Hereford ) with 22:45 left in the first half on a goal that made it 3-2 in favor of the Wolverines. After each team scored once in the ensuing 2:18, neither would score again until Sarah Carmen's goal with 1:26 left in the half sent the teams into the intermission tied at 4-4.

Moravian's Jill Pagliei scored all four of her goals in the first 18 minutes of the second half as the Greyhounds took a 9-8 lead. Wesley, however, got consecutive goals from Jade Martin (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional), Cervenka and Stephanie Bailey (Kensington, Md./Walter Johnson) and claimed an 11-9 lead with 6:02 to go.

Wesley's Farryn Kauffman (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) had perhaps her strongest game of the season, stopping 15 shots in goal.

Martin had five points in the game, scoring three times and assisting on two other scores. Amanda Browning (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) had six ground balls, while Brooke Bennett (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen) forced three turnovers.

Wesley will look for its third straight win when the Wolverines head to Bryn Mawr on March 19 for a 4:00 PM start.
