St. Andrews Edges American International
LAURINBURG, N.C.-St. Andrews Presbyterian College was trailing by one goal heading into the final three minutes but sophomore Ryan Hoover (Arnold, Md.) scored the game-tying goal at the 2:25 mark and junior Kyle Carnaggio (Pasadena, Md.) netted the game winner with 88 seconds left in regulation to lead the Knights lacrosse team to a 14-13 victory over American International College on a wet and chilly Saturday afternoon.
The Knights picked up their second straight win improving to 3-5 overall while the Yellow Jackets drop to 0-2. SAPC will try for a third straight win next Saturday when they host Catawba College at 2:00 p.m.
Sophomore Nick Lewnes (Arnold, Md.) led the St. Andrews attack with seven points including a season-high five goals and two assists. Senior Kyle Loda (Vienna, Va.) provided a hat trick and one assist. Hoover and freshman Harrison Young (Upperville, Md.) each found the back of the net twice and senior Marcus Kirby (Greensboro, N.C.) chipped in with one tally.
Carnaggio added three assists to go along with his game-winning goal for a four-point performance. Sophomore Fred Parsons (Glen Burnie, Md.) handed out three assists to increase his team-high assist total to 12. Hoover also had one assist.
AIC sophomore Aaron McNab (West Springfield, Mass.) matched Lewnes with five goals and two assists. Freshman Nicholas Brett (London, N.H.) tied McNab with seven points with three goals and a game-high four assists. Sophomore Dan MacIssac (Port Henry, Ontario, Canada) supplied a hat trick and two assists for the Yellow Jackets.
St. Andrews scored the first four goals of the game and held a 4-1 advantage after 15 minutes. American International rallied in the second quarter and tied the used a three-goal surge to tie the game for the first time at 7-7. Kirby scored with 10 seconds left in the half on a pass from Hoover to give the Knights a slim 8-7 lead at the midway point.
The two teams alternated the first eight goals of the third quarter. Lewnes started the stanza's scoring as the Knights maintained a narrow lead throughout most of the quarter but a late goal by McNab tied the contest at 11-11 heading into the decisive fourth quarter.
Loda put St. Andrews ahead again with a man-up goal but sophomore Travis Ortensi (South Hadley, Mass.) added his own extra-man opportunity to deadlock the score once again. McNab found the back of the net for the fifth time to give the visitors their only lead of the game, 13-12, with 4:47 showing on the scoreboard.
The Yellow Jackets kept the Knights scoreless for over 12 minutes after Loda's goal but Hoover finally ended the streak with the game-tying tally on an assist by Lewnes with only 2 minutes and 25 seconds left on the clock. St. Andrews senior Ethan Powell (Hilliard, Ohio) won the ensuing face off and Carnaggio scored the game-winner just 57 seconds later. Young won his 18th face off of the day with his 14th ground ball to help the Knights preserve the one-goal victory.
SAPC held a 49-28 shot advantage but sophomore goalie Mark Taylor (North Andover, Mass.) made 14 saves to keep the Yellow Jackets in the game. SAPC netminder Patrick Wade (West Windsor, N.J.) made five saves in his third win of the season.
The Knights picked up more ground balls, 51-36, and took advantage of more extra-man opportunities scoring on 5-of-11 chances compared to 2-of-5 by AIC. SAPC won 18-of-28 face offs.
