#11 Gettysburg Drops Centennial Opener at #14 Haverford
HAVERFORD, Pa. – Gettysburg was held to one second-half goal and the No. 11 Bullets lost their Centennial Conference opener, falling 8-4 at No. 14 Haverford College Saturday afternoon. The Bullets (2-3, 0-1 CC) led just once in the game but trailed just 6-4 after a Zach Pucci (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) goal with 8:21 left. But the Fords (4-1, 1-0 CC) iced the game with a pair of tallies inside the final 4:23.
Senior Tom O'Donnell (Montgomeryville, Pa./La Salle College) led Gettysburg with two goals while Max Hjelm and Brian Fleishhacker scored two goals apiece for Haverford. Travis Gregory added a goal and two assists for the Fords while Joe Banno made 11 saves.
Andrew Kim scored 2:20 into the game for Haverford, but only one goal was registered over the remainder of the period, as senior Rob Triplett (McLean, Va./McLean) tied it up with 3:28 on the clock.
The Bullets took their only lead of the contest when O'Donnell struck at the 10:03 mark of the second quarter. But the Fords would not trail again after Gregory scored with 9:10 left and Hjelm converted a man-up to put the hosts up 3-2 with 7:59 remaining. O'Donnell scored again 24 seconds later, but Hjelm gave Haverford the lead for good when he tallied his second goal with 6:31 showing,
making it a 4-3 game at the half.
The Fords scored the only two goals of the third quarter, with Fleishhacker finding the back of the net with 9:42 left and Phillip Valiant converting with 4:01 to go, completing a 3-0 run that put Haverford up 6-3 heading into the final period. But after Pucci's goal, Fleishhacker and Matt Turnier provided insurance tallies for the Fords.
Gettysburg out-shot Haverford 32-24 but the Fords held a 34-30 advantage in ground balls. The two teams split the 16 face-offs. Senior Zach Furshman (Miami, Fla./Kent School [Conn.]) was credited with four saves in goal for the Bullets.
Gettysburg plays its fourth ranked opponent of the season when it hosts No. 7 Cabrini on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
