Bentley Stages Rally to Upset No. 5 Adelphi
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Trailing 10-8 with 13 minutes remaining in the game, the Bentley University men's lacrosse team scored the game's final three goals, with senior attack Andy Curtis (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) scoring the game-winner with 5:31 left as the Falcons upset No. 5 Adelphi 11-10 on Saturday night. Junior Wyatt Couture (South Hadley, Mass./Avon Old Farms) had a team-high three goals, including two of Bentley's last three.
Bentley fell behind 10-8 after Kevin Kemp scored with 13:07 left in the game. After that though Couture went to work, scoring two unassisted goals with 10:21 left and 8:50 left to tie the score. Curtis then scored the winner for Bentley, with the assist from junior Kevin Gould (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury).
After Curtis' goal, Adelphi only got three shots off, with only one on target. The home side didn't help their cause as they pushed for the equalizer by turning the ball over five times and taking a costly one minute slashing penalty with 1:12 remaining in the game.
Bentley had a 7-5 lead in the third quarter after a Chris Woods (Duxbury, Mass./Sandwich) man-up goal, but Adelphi tied it with two straight. Couture scored his first of the game with 23 seconds left in the third quarter to briefly give Bentley an 8-7 lead, but Kemp scored with four seconds remaining to make it all square heading into the fourth quarter.
Senior goalie Kris Dambach (Chester, N.J./West Morris Central) made nine saves to earn the win. Gould added a goal to his game-high four assists for five points, which was tied for the game-high with Kemp.
Bentley returns to the field on Wednesday, March 25 for its Northeast-10 opener at Franklin Pierce at 4:00 p.m.
