Denison Rebounds with Upset of No. 9 Lynchburg
The Denison Big Red jumped out to a 7-2 lead after the first quarter and led ninth-ranked Lynchburg, 13-4 at the half en route to a 19-9 victory over the Hornets on Saturday night from St. Andrews Episcopal School in Charlottesville, Va.
Denison was led by sophomore attack Emmett Jones (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) who scored four goals and had three assists. Junior attack Brady Burton (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) also scored four goals. They were followed by senior middie Dan Maude's (Wayne, Pa./Haverford School) three goals and Tanner Smith's (Boxford, Mass./Brooks School) one goal and three assist performance. Also adding two goals apiece were Nate Hall (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington), Alex Hardt (Dallas, Texas/Episcopal) and Davis Lukens (Marietta, Ga./Holy Innocents).
Freshman Gregg Shannon (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. Anthony's) made his first career start at goalie and posted nine saves.
Lynchburg, who falls to 4-2, had just one prior defeat against top-ranked Salisbury. Since that loss in their season-opener the Hornets had posted victories over confernce rival Ohio Wesleyan, Colorado College, Muhlenberg and fifth-ranked Cabrini.
Denison improves to 2-1 with the win and will take on St. Mary's (Md.) in Annapolis, Md. next Saturday at noon.
