Damm Perfect on FOs as #9 Shoremen Roll by NEC
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Ninth-ranked host Washington College raced out to a 12-1 halftime lead and won the game's first 14 face-offs en route to a 17-3 non-conference win over New England College this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Shoremen improved to 6-1 with the win, while the Pilgrims slipped to 1-1 with the loss.
Senior midfielder Thayer Damm (Huntingdon Valley, PA/LaSalle) went 12-for-12 on face-offs and scooped up 11 ground balls for the Shoremen, all in the first half. Washington finished the game 20-of-24 on face-offs ooverall, helping the Shoremen to a 41-25 advantage in ground balls.
Senior attackman Jimmy Kielek (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) scored five goals and assisted on three others to pace Washington's offense. Junior attackman Brendan O'Leary (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) added four goals and two assists, sophomore midfielder Doug Herdegen (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) finished with three goals and two assists, and sophomore attackman Josh Perlow (Owings Mills, MD/Boys Latin) tallied three goals and two assists of his own.
Senior midfielder Casey O'Connor (Crownsville, MD/Archbishop Spalding) contributed one goal and two assists for Washington. Senior midfielder Matt Moreton (Darnestown, MD/Northwest), freshman attackman/midfielder Dave Lundquist (West Chester, PA/Henderson), and freshman attackman Dominic Serio (Finksburg, MD/Mount St. Joseph) each had one assist.
Senior goalie Gordon Cohen (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) made four saves and allowed one goal in the first 26:31 for the Shoremen. Sophomore Peter Stewart (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) played the next 33:27 and made seven saves.
Matt Vozzolo led the Pilgrims with two goals, while Jacob Ryan scored the other New England College goal. Matt Carey, Jamie Dunbar, and Ryan Von Uffel each had one assist. The Shoremen, who held a 50-21 advantage in shots, return to action Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at McDaniel.
