Manhattanville Outguns Dominican College to Go 3-0

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Senior tri-captain Abbe Grimes (Hamden, Conn.) tied for second on the school's single-game goals list with a career-high nine tallies as the Manhattanville women's lacrosse team improved to 3-0 for the first time in school history with an 18-13 win over Dominican (N.Y.) College in non-conference play on Tuesday afternoon at GoValiants.com Field.

Grimes netted the most goals by a Valiant player since Katie Frattarola scored nine against the University of Southern Maine on March 24, 2001, the last of her three career nine-goal outputs. Grimes' nine tallies rank behind only the 10 goals Frattarola scored against Western New England College on April 24, 1999. The senior added an assist for a career-high 10 points, tying her for eighth on the school's single-game points list.

For Manhattanville (3-0, 1-0 MAC), Tuesday's win marked the first time in program history that the team has won its first three games of the season, besting the 2000 team's 2-0 mark to start the year.

The tandem of Grimes and fellow senior tri-captain Katie Bertel (Colorado Springs, Colo.) combined to outscore Dominican singlehandedly, as Grimes' nine goals were complemented nicely by Bertel's career-best six goals and seven points. The team's third senior tri-captain, Colleen Holahan (New Hyde Park, N.Y.), also contributed with a career-high three assists.

Manhattanville looked to run away with the game early, as Grimes scored 57 seconds into the game and added two more quick tallies to put the home team up by three 3:21 into the game. Bertel scored off the ensuing draw only 13 seconds later to make the score 4-0 in favor of Manhattanville.

The pair combined for the Valiants' first eight goals of the match to give Manhattanville an 8-1 lead, and subsequent tallies by sophomores Darby Webber (Walpole, Mass.) and Cassie Kovac (Saugerties, N.Y.) gave the home team a 10-1 lead only 12:07 into the first half.

After a three-goal spree by the Chargers, the Valiants responded by outscoring the visitors by a 6-2 margin over the final 7:49 of the first period, with Grimes putting an emphatic end to the frame with her seventh of the game in the final second of the half.

The Valiants held a 16-6 advantage at halftime, while also possessing a 26-17 edge in total shots and a 14-8 edge in draw controls.

Dominican put a scare into Manhattanville in the second half by scoring the first six goals and holding the Valiants scoreless for the first 22-plus minutes, but a pair of goals by Grimes in the final 7:42 helped to secure Manhattanville's third straight victory.

Sophomore Kirstin Betsill (Parkton, Md.) made six saves on 12 shots in the first 30 minutes of play before ceding the net to freshman Carolyn Levine (Medford, N.Y.), who made five saves in her first collegiate appearance in the second half. For Dominican, junior Lindsey Grundfast kept her team in the game in the second half by making 13 saves, totaling 19 overall on the afternoon.

Manhattanville returns to action on Thursday, as the Valiants play their first road game of the season at Farmingdale State College beginning at 4:00 p.m. Dominican (0-2, 0-0 CACC) faces off with Philadelphia University on Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
