Argos Drop Defensive Battle to Molloy
March 17 – The Notre Dame de Namur lacrosse team suffered their first loss of the season with a 5-4 nail biter against #6 Molloy. The Argos and Lions battled back and forth all game long with neither team holding more than a one goal advantage.
The first period saw a combined 14 shots and zero goals as the two goalie combined to make five saves. In the second, Molloy got on the board at 11:28 when Tom Brewer took a feed from Keith Galante for the games first goal. NDNU responded a few minutes later when Greg Bearson shook a defender and knotted the score at 1-1.
The game moved to halftime still tied at 1-1 with the Lions holding a 22-10 shot advantage. Bearson struck again in the third, giving the Argos a 2-1 lead when he took a clear by himself and beat goalie Robert Humann. Brewer would then score back-to-back goals for Molloy as the Lions retook the lead with 2:35 left in the third. Freshman Derek Kimbrough tied the score less than a minute later when he took a pass in front of the net from Rory Galvin.
Goalie Matthew Coric made five big saves in the third to keep the score close and send the game to the fourth at 3-3. Kimbrough gave the lead back to NDNU in the opening minute of the fourth when he swung around the net and received a pass from Bearson. The Argos held the one goal advantage for the next nine minutes before Galante tied the game at 4-4 on a fast break opportunity.
Just over two minutes later the Lions went ahead for good as Albert Maione ripped a shot past Coric for the game winner. The Argos had a chance to tie in the final seconds but could not get a shot off.
Molloy held a 36-24 shot advantage and picked up 36 groundballs to 29 from the Argos.
Bearson led NDNU with three points on two goals and an assist while Kimbrough added a pair of goals. Coric made 14 saves for NDNU, including several big saves in the second half.
Brewer netted a hat trick for the Lions while Galante finished with a goal and an assist. Humann made six saves for Molloy, three of which came in the third.
The Argos moved to 4-1 on the season with the Lions improving to 3-0. NDNU closes out their home schedule on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 pm against Grand Canyon.
