No. 4 Gettysburg Stymies No. 20 Elizabethtown
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Its first national ranking in program history and a 16-goals per game scoring average didn't help 20th-ranked Elizabethtown College in its quest to upset fourth-ranked Gettysburg College as the Bullets held the Blue Jays to a season-low six goals in an 11-6 non-conference victory at Clark Field on Tuesday, March 17.
Junior Kristen Krammer (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) posted a season-high 13 saves in the victory, while junior Hollis Stahl (Highstown, N.J./Peddie School) scored four times and sophomore Allegra Formento (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) added three goals for the Bullets.
Gettysburg (5-0) struck early and often en route to its 60th consecutive victory against an opponent ranked outside the national 10 as junior Nina Emala (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) touched the nylon at 27:01. Formento followed with her first score 15 seconds later before Elizabethtown got on the board at 22:30. That would be the last Blue Jay goal for 21 minutes as Krammer stopped six first-half shots and the Bullets put in five scores to jump ahead 7-1. Katie Foley scored just before the end of the first half to cut the deficit to five.
The Bullets established control to start the final frame by netting three of the first four goals, including back-to-back scores by Formento and freshman Hannah Church (Ellicott City, Md./Mount de Sales), to jump in front 10-3 with 16:49 remaining.
Katie Foley notched her 200th career goal with 13:58 left, but Stahl tossed in her fourth score of the night with six minutes to go to up the advantage back to seven (11-4). The Blue Jays scored the final two goals of the contest 20 seconds apart before the five-minute mark.
Gettysburg had slight advantages in shots (33-25), ground balls (20-17), and draw controls (11-8). The Bullets also finished 18-of-23 on clear attempts, while holding Elizabethtown to 12-of-19.
Stahl connected on half of her team-high eight shot attempts and also posted four ground balls and three draw controls. Junior Lexie Hearn (Old Greenwich, Conn./Old Greenwich), Emala, and sophomore Marnie Commins (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson) each recorded one goal and one assist, while junior Anna Scanlan (Lutherville, Md./Roland Park Country School) scooped up four ground balls and caused one turnover for Gettysburg.
Foley and Anna Ford each scored twice for Elizabethtown, the former adding an assist and three draw controls. Goalkeeper Jenn Hawkins made a dozen stops and recorded a pair of caused turnovers and a team-high five ground balls.
Gettysburg will host an exhibition contest against Nihon University from Japan on Thursday, March 19, at 4:30 p.m. The Bullets return to intercollegiate play with their second Centennial Conference contest of the season at Swarthmore College on Saturday, March 21, at 1:00 p.m.
