Mount St. Mary's Hammered by Hofstra

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Hofstra defeated Mount St. Mary's 19-5 in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Wednesday.

Ashley Johnson (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West) paced the Mount (0-8) with two goals and an assist while Katelyn Catanese (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) , Kathleen Rossetti (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) and Lucy Pompa (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) also found the twine in the loss.

Ashley Jones fueled the Pride (4-3) with three goals and two assists. Corrine Gandolfi added three tallies and a helper and Maryann Miller found the twine three times in the winning effort.

Hofstra rallied from a three-goal deficit and then never looked back to earn the victory in the first meetings between the two programs.

Trailing 4-1 with 11:12 left in the first half, the Pride scored the final six goals of the stanza to take a 7-4 lead going into halftime.

K'Leigh Vanaman started the run with an unassisted tally at 21:03 before Gandolfi set up Miller 83 seconds later and then Falco fed Jones at 23:10 to knot the score at 4. After Gandolfi gave Hofstra the lead for good on an unassisted marker at 25:52, Lauren Whitcomb (27:55) and Kailey Ruszkowski (29:26) ended the string of six-straight goals to end the first half.

Hofstra then scored five-straight goals to start the second half to take a 12-4 advantage. Gandolfi (31:58), Katie Hersch (32:29), Miller (33:29), Jones (35:08) and Stephanie Rice (35:43) each scored in the first six minutes of the final stanza.

Pompa momentarily halted the Pride's run with a free-position goal at 39:41, but Hofstra ended the game with seven-straight to earn the 19-5 win. Jones (40:02), Cat Thoreson (43:42), Gandolfi (48:15), Rice (49:49), Thoreson (55:00), Falco (58:16) and Miller (58:48) scored the goals for Hofstra in the game-ending run.

Mount St. Mary's opened the game by scoring four of the first five goals to take a 4-1 advantage. Rossetti started the scoring with an unassisted tally at 3:29 before Johnson converted a free-position shot at 5:21 for a 2-0 edge.

Jacquelyn Hetzel put the Pride on the scoreboard off a Courtney O'Connor assist at 11:29.

The Mountaineers answered with two-straight markers to grab a three-goal lead. Catanese found the twine off a Johnson assist at 13:25 before Johnson scored off a pass from Breana Waraksa (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) at 18:48. Hoftsra then scored 18 of the final 19 goals for the victory.

Mary Cuddihy made three saves in 46:18 minutes while Jackie Pandolf turned away one shot in the win. Brigid McTavish (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll) made five saves, Erin Kelly (Derwood, Md./Magruder) had three stops and Melanie Showers (Poolesville, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) had one save.

Senior Brianna Gauthier (Severna Park, Md./St. Mary's), who scored 1,128 career points for Mount women's basketball team, made her women's lacrosse debut and notched one shot, two ground balls, a draw control and a caused turnovers.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Friday when it opens up Northeast Conference play at the Waldron Family Stadium against Long Island. Game time is 3:00 p.m.

Emmitsburg, MD -- Junior attack Ashley Jones had a game-high five points and junior midfielder Corrine Gandolfi added four points to help the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team rebound from an early 4-1 deficit en route to a 19-5 rout of Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday afternoon in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

Jones had three goals and two assists, while Gandolfi added three goals and one assist in helping the Pride recover from a 4-1 hole with 11:12 left in the opening half.
