Wingate, N.C. -- Wingate University senior attack Greg Williams (Woodbridge, Va.) posted a career-best six goals as the Bulldogs won their third game in their last four tries, a 17-8 NCAA Division II men's lacrosse decision over previously undefeated Pfeiffer University Wednesday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field on the Wingate campus.

With the victory, Wingate improves to 3-5 overall. Pfeiffer is 6-1 overall. The Bulldogs host number four Merrimack (Mass.) College Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The Falcons return home Wednesday, March 25, entertaining Conference Carolinas foe St. Andrews Presbyterian College at 4:00 p.m.

Williams contributed four goals to a 9-0 flurry that turned a 7-4 Wingate lead late in the second quarter into a 16-4 advantage early in the fourth quarter. Fittingly, Williams scored the last two goals of the run. Williams has a team-best 20 goals this season.

The Bulldogs led 2-0 after the first quarter, thanks to back-to-back goals by redshirt junior attack Angus Derbyshire (Thurmont, Md.). Pfeiffer junior attack Shawn Cross (Cranberry Township, Pa.) got the Falcons on the board at the 10:40 mark of the second period.

Wingate answered with a 3-0 run, concluded by a Williams goal with 6:39 remaining in the second frame. Williams' first goal of the contest gave the Bulldogs a 5-1 advantage. Pfeiffer responded with goals by junior attack Chadwick Olsen (Great Mills, Md.) and senior attack Kevin Anderson (Altamonte Springs, Fla.), but the Falcons would get no closer.

The Bulldogs took advantage of every break, as the hosts converted three-of-three extra-man opportunities. The Falcons capitalized on two-of-five EMO chances. Both teams took 28 shots each; Wingate held a slight 37-34 edge in ground balls.

Eight student-athletes scored goals for the victorious Bulldogs. Derbyshire and redshirt senior midfielder Mark Hodsdon (Hilton Head, S.C.) were two of four Wingate players with two goals each. The reigning Deep South Conference Offensive Player of the Week, Hodsdon added a team-best three assists Wednesday.

Cross, Olsen and Anderson had two goals each for the Falcons. Anderson was one of four Pfeiffer players with an assist Wednesday. Anderson is the current Conference Carolinas Offensive Player of the Week. Cross and Olsen have 21 goals each this season.

Wingate freshman goalie Danny Dlugozima (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) earned his second victory in as many starts, recording 10 saves. He allowed eight goals and faced 28 shots while going the distance. Pfeiffer junior netminder Jimmy Dyches (Abingdon, Md.) took the loss. In 39-plus minutes, Dyches gave up 12 goals. He notched three saves.

Wingate, NC -- Pfeiffer men’s lacrosse fell for the first time this season
to the Bulldogs of Wingate University on Wednesday afternoon. The Falcons
lost the non-conference game 17-8 for an overall record of 6-1. Wingate
improves to 3-5 overall.
