Michele Leads Huskies But UConn Falls to Harvard

STORRS, Conn. (March 18, 2009) – University of Connecticut lacrosse senior captain Whitney Michele (East Rochester, N.Y.) led all scorers with eight points in the Huskies' 14-12 loss to Harvard on Wednesday evening. The Huskies outscored the Crimson 6-3 in the second half at George J. Sherman-Family Sports Complex. Michele scored five goals and had three assists to finish with a season-high in points.

Michele, who has had multiple point games in seven of eight contests for UConn, scored twice in a four-goal run near the end of regulation to bring the Huskies to within two goals (14-12). She capped off a Huskies' three-goal run of the game, capitalizing on a free-position shot to start the second session. That goal cut UConn's deficit 11-7 before Harvard (3-3) scored twice to pull away to a 12-7 edge.

Less than seven minutes into the second period, Michele hit the back of the net for the second time off an assist from Katie Devaney (Fayetteville, N.Y.). Harvard's leading scorer Jess Halpern answered almost a minute later to bring the Crimson ahead by six again (14-8).

With just over 19 minutes left on the clock, the freshman duo of Kiersten Tupper (Camillus, N.Y.) and M.E. Lapham (Cazenovia, N.Y.) spurred a four-goal run by Connecticut. Tupper tallied her 12th of the season while Lapham added a point to her total for the day. Lapham scored late in the second half and finished the game with two points.

Michele added a pair after Tupper's goal and Ashley Mitchelides (Hudson, Ohio) recorded in second multiple point game of the season in less than 30 seconds. She had an assist on Michele's tally at 5:18 and scored her own goal on a free-position shot at 4:50 to bring the Huskies to within three goals (14-11).

Neither team was able to get on the board following Michele's goal at 3:39 with the Huskies trailing 14-12. Devaney saw her free-position attempt stopped by Kerry Clark as the Crimson maintained possession as time expired.

Also among UConn's six goal scorers was Katy Ryan (Hamburg, N.Y.) who scored the first two Connecticut goals. Tupper also scored twice and added a pair of assists to finish the game with four points.

The Huskies (0-8) host their second Ivy League opponent of the season with a 1:00 p.m. game against Brown on Saturday.
