Widener Ties Game at 0:37 Then Downs Wesley in OT
CHESTER, Pa. - Widener tied the game with 37 seconds left in regulation and then again with 33 seconds left in overtime to steal a 9-8 win in overtime from Wesley College.
Wesley scored three times in the second period, while holding the Pride off the scoreboard to erase a 4-3 deficit after the first period and take a 6-4 lead into the half. Nick Pisacano (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) scored the game tying goal in the second quarter, then assisted Brad Smith (Glen Burnie, Md./Old Mill) on a go ahead score. Smith then fed Joe Trezza (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) to end the half.
The Wolverines held Widener scoreless again in the third and added Justin Thompson's (Pasadena, Md./North East) second goal of the night before the Pride mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter. Cory Malampy's second and third goals of the game shaved Wesley's lead to just a goal and Andrew Janusz tied it with 4:15 to play.
The Wolverines took an 8-7 lead with just a minute left in the game, but Widener won the next face off. Jim McCleaft (Media, Pa./Sun Valley) turned away a shot by Malampy, but the JJ Hoefler forced a Wesley turnover and scored the game-tying goal to force overtime.
Then in overtime, Justin Upp hit the crossbar with 47 seconds to play before Brian Rogers gained possession and scored the game-winner 14 seconds later.
Smith had a goal and two assists to lead Wesley. Kirk Waldie (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) had nine groundballs and forced four turnovers. McCleaft stopped 13 shots.
Hoeffler had two goals and two assists for four points in the win. Nick Fluharty won 13-of-19 faceoffs and had seven groundballs.
