Dominican College Falls to Philadelphia University
Orangeburg, NY (3/19/09) -- The Dominican College women's lacrosse team lost their inaugural Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game to the visiting Rams of Philadelphia University, 17-5 this afternoon at the Torne Valley Sports Complex.
The Lady Chargers were able to get on the board in the first 27 seconds of the game as freshman Aubree Williams (Great Meadows, NJ) netted the unassisted goal. The Rams answered back with two unanswered goals by sophomore Michelle O'Hanlon (Springfield, PA), with the first goal coming off the pass by Caribeth Shappell (Reinholds, PA) to take a 2-1 advangtage.
Sophomore Amanda Matos (Vernon, NJ) tied the game for Dominican with 20:57 remaining in the first half off the dish by Sarah Kiernan (Saugerties, NY). Philadelphia went on a 5-0 spurt in just under seven minutes to take a 7-2 lead before midfielder Silje Karlsen (Vernon, NJ) netted an unassisted goal.
The Rams once again went on an offensive tear, with another 5-0 run, as attacker Lauren Woodie (Monmouth Beach, NJ) scored three straight goals to rebuild the lead to 12-3 with just over seven minutes remaining in the first half.
Junior Ashley Ordemann (Toms River, NJ) netted a goal with 6:58 left as Philadelphia went on to the 13-4 halftime lead. The Rams had another 4-0 run in the second half to take a 17-4 lead, with Taylor Pletzer (Holland, PA) netting two goals, before Matos rounded out the scoring with a free position goal as the Rams went on to the 17-5 victory.
Peltzer led the Rams with six points (five goals, one assist), while three other players finished with five points, respectively. Goalie Katherine Sulivan (Mt. Laurel, NJ) had 18 saves in the win.
Matos led Dominican with two points, while junior goalie Lindsey Grundfast (Saugerties, NY) had 5 saves in the loss.
Both teams were even with 30 shots each, while Philadelphia had the edge in ground balls 19-17 and in draw controls, 15-8.
With the win Philadelphia improves to 2-3 overall and 2-0 in the CACC, while Dominican falls to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the CACC.
Dominican is back in action next Tuesday when they host Chestnut Hill College in CACC women's lacrosse action from the Torne Valley Sports Complex. Game time is slated for 4:00 pm.
