Johns Hopkins Outlasts George Washington in Overtime
BALTIMORE, MD - Johns Hopkins rallied from five goals down midway through the second half, then got two overtime goals to defeat George Washington 13-12 on Thursday afternoon at Homewood Field. The Blue Jays snap a two-game losing skid and improve to 3-4 on the year, while the Colonials slip to 1-8. Freshman Candace Rossi (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) and sophomore Brianna Cronin (Arlington, MA/Arlington) notched hat tricks to lead the Blue Jays.
Coming out of the half, the Colonials held a three-goal advantage and needed just one minute and 17 seconds to make it a five-goal lead. Hopkins promptly called timeout after back-to-back goals by Megan Seidman made it a 9-4 game. Hopkins finally got back on the board with 24:01 to play in the half, snapping a 23-minute scoreless streak and halting a 6-0 George Washington run. Rossi got things going when she dodged the right side and scored over Liz Hoffman's left shoulder, completing her hat trick. That ignited a 7-0 Blue Jay run as Hopkins turned a five-goal deficit into a two-goal lead.
Cronin cut it to three with a free position goal, the first of her three on the day, with 22:30 to play. Just over two minutes later, freshman Rachel Ballatori (Rochester, NY/Brighton) scored her first career goal to make it a 9-7 game. Both teams struggled to maintain possession, as neither team would find the cage over the next 10 minutes. Freshman Colleen McCaffrey (Mount Sinai, NY/Mount Sinai) made it a one-goal game with 11:49 remaining when she dodged the middle and scored over Hoffman's left shoulder. Less than two minutes later, Hopkins capitalized on a George Washington turnover, as senior Jenny Higgins (Reisterstown, MD/Franklin) scored in transition, knotting the game at 9-9.
Just 31 seconds later, Hopkins took its first lead since 17:01 in the first half when Cronin scored on a bounce shot off a right-side dodge. Cronin would need just 42 seconds to complete her hat trick, scoring on an identical move to put Hopkins on top 11-9 with 8:40 to play.
The Colonials were not done yet however. George Washington won the ensuing draw and Becca Kreshtool connected with Seidman to cut the deficit to one with 8:01 remaining. Seidman would then knot the score at 11-11 with 3:08 to play on a free position goal, her fifth consecutive goal. Hopkins won the draw and sophomore Brooke Foussadier (Turnersville, NJ/Washington Township) got off a clean shot, but Hoffman came up with the save and the Colonials took possession with 2:54 remaining. Kreshtool got off a shot in front of the cage as time was winding down, but the shot was blocked and sophomore Julianne Wisner (Parkton, MD/Notre Dame Prep) collected the ground ball as the horn sounded.
Junior Sam Schrum (Pasadena, MD/St. Mary's) pushed the Blue Jays back on top with 1:37 to play in the first overtime on a nice pass from junior Brett Bathras (Severna Park, MD/Severn School). Just 26 seconds later, off a Hopkins clear, junior Angela Hughes (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) took the ball in the midfield and went right to the GW cage, scoring her third of the season to give the Blue Jays a two-goal lead.
In the second overtime, Taylor Donohue rolled insider her defender along the crease and scored on a low shot to cut the deficit to one. GW won the ensuing draw and began working the ball around on offense. Donohue, goal line extended, attempted a pass to the middle of the arc, but Foussadier scooped up the loose ball and carried it all the way into the offensive zone with 1:14 remaining. Hopkins maintained possession for the remainder of the game to hold on for the win.
