No. 19 Denison Handles St. Mary's (Md.)

Severna Park, Md. - The 19th ranked Denison men's lacrosse team followed up their 19-9 win over then No. 9 Lynchburg last Saturday with a strong 14-7 win over St. Mary's (Md.) this afternoon from The Severn School in Annapolis, Md. Denison improves to 3-1 with the win and will return to Granville in preparation for their North Coast Athletic Conference opener against Wittenberg this Wednesday (March 25) at 7:30 p.m. from Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.

Nine different players accounted for Denison's 14 goals, but sophomore attack and current North Coast Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week Emmett Jones (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy), managed to lead all scorers with a five-goal string that started at the 9:24 mark of the third quarter and lasted till there was just under 11 minutes to play in the fourth. Jones' five unanswered goals kept thoughts of a Seahawk comeback attempt at bay.

Senior attack Nate Hall (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) assisted on three of those Jones goals. He also scored his eighth goal of the season in the fourth quarter which gave DU a 13-3 lead. Denison's only other multi-goal scorer was first-year Davis Lukens (Marietta, Ga./Holy Innocents) who netted two goals off eight shots.

The Big Red were 2-for-4 in extra man opportunities. Their first came in the first quarter when junior Brady Burton scored off a pass from Cory Couture (San Diego, Calif./Coronado) to tie the game at 1-1. The second came mid-way through the third quarter on a Jones from Hall scoring play which kicked off Jones' scoring streak.

DU scooped up 36 ground balls to St. Mary's 24 and the Big Red were a perfect 13-for-13 when clearing the ball. Junior Connor Detjen (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) led the team in ground balls with seven and was 10-for-19 in face-off's. Rookie goalie Greg Shannon (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. Anthony's) notched a career-high 11 saves and also added six ground balls in his second career start.

Severna Park, Md. - The No. 19 Denison University men's lacrosse team closed its spring break trip on a high note with a 14-7 non-conference win over St. Mary's College of Maryland Saturday afternoon on Lynch Field at the Severn School in Severna Park, Maryland.

Sophomore attackman Emmett Jones (Colorado Springs, Colo.) commanded the Big Red offense with a game-high five goals, including three in a 4:28-minute span in the fourth period. Freshman midfielder Davis Lukens (Marietta, Ga.) contributed two goals, while senior attackman Nate Hall (Columbus, Ohio) added a goal and three assists.

St. Mary's (2-4) hung tough with nationally ranked Denison, striking first at 12:02 as freshman attackman John Dehm (Trumbull, Conn./Middlesex [Mass.]) found the back of the net with an unassisted goal. The Big Red responded with three straight goals to claim the lead for good. Sophomore attackman Dennis Rosson (Severna Park, Md./Severn) converted a feed from sophomore middie Colin Gload (Parkton, Md./Hereford) to pull the Seahawks within 3-2 with three seconds left in the first period.

Denison's (3-1) defense held the Seahawks scoreless for the next two periods as the Big Red scored three times in the second quarter to take a 6-2 lead at halftime.

Jones tallied the next five goals as he netted the only two scores in the third stanza to increase Denison's lead to 8-2.

Jones then opened up the fourth period with three straight followed by Lukens' second of the day to give their team a 12-2 edge with 9:05 left in the contest. Rosson put an end to Denison's 9-0 run with his 11th tally of the season at 8:11. Hall notched his lone goal of the day at 5:04 before the Seahawks scored four of the game's final five, including a pair from sophomore attackman Chris Becraft (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel), for the 14-7 final.
