LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Sophomore attacker Bergan Foley had six goals to lead the University of Louisville to a 14-8 win over visiting Virginia Tech Saturday afternoon at U of L Lacrosse Stadium.

On paper, the game was tighter than the scoreboard projected, with each team taking a total of 32 shots. Starting goalkeeper Jen Heup made 13 saves while the Hokie keeper, Kari Morrison, made 12. The Cardinals had 13 draw controls to VT's 10 and 24 ground balls to Tech's 21.

"We were not sure what Virginia Tech would bring because of last year when we beat them on a last second goal for the win," said U of L head coach Kellie Young. "I feel we were a bit tight in the midfield early on before we got control of the game tempo near the end of the first half and early in the second half."

Seeking to avenge a one-goal loss to the Cardinals a year ago, the Hokies hoped to jump on U of L early but didn't count on Foley's explosive shooting. Foley scored the first goal at 28:38 and then scored two of the next two Cardinal goals to take U of L up 4-2. Tech's Jessica Nonn closed the gap with a goal at 4:20 to come within one at 4-3 but Foley scored again at 2:32 and U of L's Sammy Allen added one 13 second later to go up 6-3. Nonn scored again at 1:02 for Tech to make it 6-4. Emily Dashiell scored on a free position shot at :30 to give the Cardinals a 7-4 margin going into the half.

Dashiell carried her momentum into the second half with a goal at 28:41. Nonn answered with a Hokie tally just 41 seconds later to keep Virginia Tech within striking distance at 8-5. But the Cardinals scored five of the next six goals with Lianne Bobal notching two during the streak to take the score to 13-6. Nonn and Rachel Culp scored two straight goals at 9:52 and 8:41 before the Cardinal defense shut down the Hokies for the rest of the game. Foley added an insurance goal from Liz Lovejoy at 1:07 for the final score of the game.

"We had some good learning opportunities especially in game management," said Young. "It was a great win over a quality team with good, good athletes that we were luckily able to shut down."

Foley ended the game with six goals and an assist, adding a ground ball and causing a turnover. Dashiell had three goals and three assists, three ground balls and three draw controls. Lianne Bobal had two goals with teammate Tara Restly had a goal and two assists. Janaye Dzikewich had two caused turnovers with Aimee Dixon adding a team high five ground balls. Tech was led by Nonn's four goals and two draw controls.

The Cardinals open their inaugural BIG EAST season against national power Syracuse March 27 in Syracuse and then travel to UConn to play the Huskies March 29.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Rookie Jessica Nonn and senior Rachel Culp combined for seven goals, but the Virginia Tech women's lacrosse team could not overcome the Cardinals' duo of Bergan Foley and Emily Dashiell as Tech fell to Louisville 14-8 in a non-conference match played on Saturday afternoon at the University of Louisville Lacrosse Stadium.

After dropping the past two contests, the Hokies' record now stands at 4-6 on the year and 1-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Louisville improves to 6-1 for the season.

Foley opened the scoring with the ! rst goal of the match under two minutes into the contest and would go on to tally four of Louisville's ! rst ! ve scores. The Hokies' Dylan Garner (So., Cornelius, N.C.) knotted the score at one-all on a free position shot and the two teams would trade possessions during the next four minutes until Foley struck again to give Louisville the 2-1 lead with just over 20 minutes remaining in the ! rst half.
