Dominant Second Half Leads No. 3 Cornell Past Yale
New Haven, Conn. -- The Yale men's lacrosse team gave No. 3 Cornell all it could handle for almost three quarters before the Big Red prevailed 15-8 before 1,538 at Reese Stadium.
Cornell had leads of 3-0 and 4-2 before Ryan Hurley put the visitors up for good, 6-5, at 9:46 of the third quarter. That goal was the start of a 5-0 run that ended with the Red tallying 10 of the last 13 goals to improve to 5-1 in its Ivy opener.
Yale (3-3, 1-1 Ivy), which didn't win any of the statistical categories, still managed to hang with a perennial national power that was coming off a road win at Duke. The Big Red had the advantage in shots (53-33), ground balls (47-31) and faceoffs (18 of 27).
The Bulldogs, who had opened Ivy play a week ago with an OT win at Penn, had a pair of goals from Matt Gibson and Brendan Gibson. The other Yale players who hit the net were Brian Douglass, Michael Karwoski, Nick Tsouris and Matt Fuchs.
Jonathan Falcone, a sophomore, got the start for Yale and made 14 saves. Hurley and Rob Pannell each found the Eli net three times, but Falcone held them off for much of the game.
Kyle Harer made 10 saves to earn the win while allowing six Yale goals. Jake Myers came on in relief and did not stop either of the two shots on target.
