No. 10 Washington & Lee Beaches the Marlins
LEXINGTON, Va. - Junior attacker Meredith Freeman (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) notched four goals and one assist to lead the 10th-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team to a 13-7 ODAC-victory over Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.
The Generals (5-2, 3-0) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening 25:55 of the contest, but VWC sliced it to a two-goal game (4-2) at 19:30. W&L then outscored the Marlins, 4-1, over the next 18:01, including two tallies from Freeman, to push out an 8-3 lead at the half.
W&L scored the first two goals of the second period to up its advantage to 10-3 at 25:41. VWC senior midfielder Kacey Marchwicki (Boyds, Md./Poolesville) then scored off of a sophomore attacker Jordan Venetis (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks) feed at 17:58 (10-4).
The Generals answered back with two goals over the next 8:40 (12-4). The Marlins tallied three-straight goals, including two by junior attacker Laura Norris (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown), to slice it to a 12-7 game at 4:01, but that would not be enough as the Generals held on for the six-goal victory.
Freeman's effort was supplemented by sophomore midfielder Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr), who amassed three goals. Senior midfielder Colleen Evans (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) and junior attacker Britten Mathews (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) totaled two goals and one assist apiece, while senior midfielder Kelsi Robinson (West Chester, Pa./Westtown) added one goal and one assist. Sophomore goalkeeper Katharine Farrar (Lexington, Va./Episcopal) played all 60 minutes between the pipes and notched 10 saves.
VWC (4-4, 2-1) was led by Norris' two goals. Norris also chipped in one assist, while Marchwicki recorded two goals. Senior attacker Bethany Adomanis (Arnold, Md./Severn Archbishop Spalding) added one goal and one assist, while senior midfielder Aimee Sraver (Timonium, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) and first-year attacker Courtney Williams (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) chipped in one goal each. Senior Ashley Sippel (Leesburg, Va./Ashburn Stone Bridge) played the entire duration in goal and registered seven saves.
The No. 10 Generals return to action on Tuesday as they host No. 4 Middlebury for a 4:00 pm game.
