Saint Anselm Rolls by Dominican in Non-Conference Play
Orangeburg, NY (3/21/09) -- The Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team defeated host Dominican College, 14-8, in a non-conference game at the Torne Valley Sports Complex this afternoon.
Saint Anselm got on the board with 8:41 left in the first quarter as sophomore midfielder Ryan Henry (Norwood, MA) netted an unassisted goal. The Chargers fired back with a 3-0 run as freshmen Korin Pierce (Middleburg, VA) netted an unassisted goal and Gabe Sutherland (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) had back-to-back goals off passes by Sean Murphy (Pearl River, NY) and senior Jeremy Arcaro (New Windsor, NY) to take a 3-1 lead.
Saint Anselm offense exploded after that, going on a 12-0 tear to take a 13-3 lead. Pierce stopped the scoring drought for the Chargers with a goal with just 0:21 seconds left in the third quarter off the dish by sophomore Jesse Peterson (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan).
The Hawks opened up the fourth quarter with an unassisted goal by junior Justin Hall (Sudbury, MA) and Dominican finished up the game with a 4-0 run as Pierce notched his third goal, senior James Murphy (Pearl River, NY) added an unassisted goal and Arcaro netted the game's last two goals, with one coming off a pass from Pierce.
Pierce led the Chargers with three goals and one assist for four points, while Arcaro finished with two points. Goalie Brendan Bonacum (Port Jefferson Station, NY) had 19 saves in 55 minutes, while sophomore Tim Manzella (Riverhead, NY) had one save.
Junior Matt O'Connell (Charlestown, MA) led the Hawks with five total points (one goal, four assists) while Matt Surette (Wakefield, MA) netted four goals for four points, Jeff Dunkle (Exeter, NH) added three goals and Henry finished with two goals. Goalie Dan Flynn (Wakefield, MA) had 11 saves in the win, while Pat Acone (Bow, NH) had two saves in four and a half minutes of action.
With the loss the Chargers fall to 0-4 on the year, while the Hawks improve to 2-2.

The Hawks built the lead to 8-3 at the half after Dominican jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead in the early going. Saint Anselm put together 12 unanswered goals for the 13-3 advantage. The Chargers finished the game with four straight scores in the loss.
Surette led the Hawks with four goals, while Jeff Dunkle (Exeter, N.H.) also had a hat trick. Matt O'Connell (Charlestown, Mass.) had a team-best four assists in the win. Korin Pierce led the hosts with three goals.
Dan Flynn (Wakefield, Mass.) took the win with 11 saves, while Brendan Bonacum had 19 saves in the loss.
Saint Anselm is now 2-2 overall on the season. The Hawks are back in action on Wednesday afternoon, hosting Assumption for a game beginning at 4:00 p.m.
