Hampden-Sydney Falls to No. 11 Haverford in Alexandria
ALEXANDRIA, VA (March 21, 2009) - Hampden-Sydney had a tough outing against the #11 Fords of Haverford College. Though it was a neutral site game at St. Stephen's & St. Agnes, Haverford played like it was a home game holding the Tigers scoreless until 9:47 to go in the third quarter and built an 8-0 lead in the process.
Junior Kyle Jett (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond Suffolk) broke the scoring rout as he beat his man on the left side of the goal and ripped a shot to find the back of the net. Haverford would score two more goals to end the quarter giving the Fords a 10-1 lead going into the final stanza.
Jett started the fourth quarter scoring as he notched his second of the day off of a nice feed from senior Kenny Mathison (Northport, NY/East Northport). Haverford fired off three more goals before junior Kevin Coats (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) scored the final goal of the game which was assisted by Jett.
Junior goalie Mark Bagby (Boston, MA/Marshfield) stopped eight shots on the day while Thomas Hovis (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's) led the Tigers in groundballs with five. Bill Tunney (Hampstead, MD/North Carroll) had a solid face-off day winning nine of his 15 attempts.
On the day, Hampden-Sydney was outshot 30-25, but won the groundball battle 31-25. Both teams won nine face-offs. Haverford's Max Hjelm led all scorers with four goals while Myles Monaghan was not far behind tallying three goals.
The Tigers return to action next Saturday, March 24 as they face the Quakers of Guilford College on the Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium on the campus of Hampden-Sydney. Action is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
