No. 6 Mercyhurst Downs IUP to Stay Perfect

Erie, Pa. – The sixth-ranked Mercyhurst College women's lacrosse team kept its perfect record intact with a 10-6 win over Indiana (Pa.) Monday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division contest. The Lakers are now 5-0 on the season and 3-0 in conference play.

Breanna Haggerty and Kimberly Masterton combined for seven of the Lakers' 10 goals. Haggerty contributed four of the scores to improve her season total to 18 and mark her second straight four-goal outing. Masterton, meanwhile, notched three goals for her second straight three-score performance.

Mercyhurst set the tone early on, scoring four goals before the clock hit the 25-minute mark. Masterton opened the contest with a goal just 14 seconds in at 29:46. Kristen Toomey, Haggerty and Kristie Jennings followed suit with markers to balloon the lead to four.

After the barrage, the Crimson Hawks outscored the Lakers, 3-1, heading into halftime. Alex Slinkard and Amanda Fetter added back-to-back markers at 22:28 and 21:54 to cut the deficit to three, but another from Haggerty put the Lakers back out in front by four at 12:34. Beth Glasshagel closed out the frame with an unassisted marker at 3:54.

The Lakers controlled the first half with a 13-6 edge in shots and a 10-6 advantage in ground balls.

Mercyhurst finished off the Crimson Hawks in the second half with another five scores. Haggerty got the team going with a goal at 26:59 to make the score 7-3. After a pair of IUP scores from Becca Vogt and Stephanie Bianco at 26:13 and 24:35, the Lakers clamped down on the home team, holding a 4-1 edge in scoring through final 24 minutes of play. Masterton added two of her scores during that run, including the closing marker with 44 seconds remaining.

Maeve McGoff picked up the win with 10 saves while Katie Lee suffered the loss with 15 stops. The Lakers finished the game with a 25-16 advantage in shots.

Mercyhurst will remain on the road for its next game as the Lakers visit Lock Haven for a 7:00 p.m. contest on Thursday, March 26.
