Lady Chargers Rally Falls One Goal Short vs. Chestnut Hill
Orangeburg, NY (3/24/09) -- The Dominican College Lady Chargers lacrosse team went on a late 3-0 run in the second half, but was unable to pull ahead of the visiting Chestnut Hill College Griffins as the Griffins went on to the 18-17 victory this afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women's lacrosse action at the Torne Valley Sports Complex.
The Griffins got on the board in the first three minutes of action with two goals by sisters Carley Glass (Baltimore, MD) and Maryanne Glass (Baltimore, MD). Midfielder Silje Karlsen (Vernon, NJ) netted the first goal for DC with 25:11 remaining in the first half to cut the lead to 2-1.
CHC went on a 3-0 run, with M. Glass netting two of them, to rebuild a 5-1 lead but a goal by freshman Aubree Williams (Great Meadows, NJ) off the pass by Sarah Kiernan (Saugerties, NY) cut the lead to 5-2. DC went on to outscore the Griffins 4-2 in the final 10:30 of the first half to only trail CHC, 7-6.
Down 18-14 with 6:30 left in the game, the Lady Chargers netted three goals in 1:04 seconds to cut the lead to 18-17, but they couldn't get the ball into the offsenive half of the field as CHC hung on for the win.
C. Glass led the Griffins with 10 points (8 goals, 2 assists), while M. Glass had seven points (5, goals, 2 assists) in the win. Senior attacker Katie Donovan (Conshohocken, PA) picked up five goals and one assist for six points. Goalie Stephanie Jordan (Tylersport, PA) made 21 saves in the net.
The Lady Chargers were led by freshman midfielder Aubree Williams (Great Meadows, NJ) with a career high seven goals for seven points. Kiernan finished with three goals and an assist for four points, while Karlsen finished with three points (2 goals, 1 assist) and sophomore Amanda Matos (Vernon, NJ) also had three points (3 goals). Junior goalie Lindsey Grundfast (Saugerties, NY) made 13 saves in the net.
With the win Chestnut Hill improves to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the CACC, while Dominican falls to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the CACC.
Dominican is back in action on Thursday when they host Kean University in a non-conference game slated to begin at 4:00 pm at the Torne Valley Sports Complex.
