No. 13 Catholic Vanquishes No. 20 Devils
(Carlisle, Pa.) - The Dickinson College women's lacrosse team suffered a 19-16 setback to Catholic University in a meeting of nationally-ranked teams. The Cardinals are ranked 13th in the latest IWLCA/Under Armour National Coaches' poll, while the Devils hold the #20-spot.
Catholic struck first before the Red Devils went on a 6-1 run to pull in front 6-2 with 14:01 remaining. The Cardinals answered, scoring four straight before trading goals to make the count, 7-7, at halftime.
Catholic opened the second half with a 5-1 run to take a 12-8 advantage with 24:09 remaining in the contest. The Red Devils battled back, cutting the margin to one after Lexie Kob (Collegeville, Pa./Springford) scored on an assist from Amy Jennings (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) to make the score 14-13 with 11:47 on the clock.
Another 5-1 run gave Catholic a 19-14 edge with just two minutes to play in the game. The Devils tacked on a pair of goals in the last 1:02 for the final of 19-16.
Mary Swarthout led Catholic (7-2) with a game-high six goals, adding four draw controls. Melissa Brashear made eight saves in goal.
Jennings finished with two goals and four assists on the day while Kob tallied two goals and two assists. Lucy West (Bethesda, Md./Holton-Arms) scored a team-high four goals and Kelsey Muir (Glen Mills, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) added three goals on the day.
Amanda West (Harleysville, Pa./North Penn) controlled four ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers. Renee Welker (Butler, Pa./Shady Side) caused a pair of turnovers and had two GBs. Sunnie Ko (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) was solid on the circle, controlling eight draws, adding a goal.
Sophomore Jessie Clark (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) made 10 saves, picked-up three ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers in the Devil cage.
The Red Devils slip to 6-2 overall. They travel to Elizabethtown on Thursday to face the Blue Jays at 4:00 pm.
