No. 8 Washington College Gets by Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Washington College senior midfielder Casey O'Connor scored both of his goals in the fourth quarter as the eighth-ranked Shoremen (8-1, 3-0 Centennial) escaped with a 7-5 win over Ursinus (3-4, 1-1 Centennial) Wednesday afternoon in Centennial Conference men's lacrosse action.

O'Connor scored both goals unassisted at 6:53 and 2:07 in the fourth quarter as the Shoremen improved to 6-1 all-time against Ursinus. Senior attack Jimmy Kielek added two goals and an assist for the Shoremen.

For Ursinus, five players scored goals as junior attack Pat Nagle (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville), senior attack Jason Orlando (Morton, PA/Springfield), freshman midfielder David Kraus (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand), sophomore midfielder Pat Gillen (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) and junior attack Dan Monzo (Collegeville, PA/Spring-Ford) each registered a goal.

Freshman attack Andrew Bean (Tampa, FL/Freedom) had two assists, while junior attack Eric Farris (Pottsgrove, PA/Pottsgrove) and junior long stick midfielder Derrin Mangin (Willow Grove, PA/Archbishop Wood) each assisted on goals.

Ursinus struck first as Monzo scored his seventh goal of the season at 12:52 on a Mangin assist for an early 1-0 lead. Washington answered back with a goal from sophomore attack Josh Perlow at 11:26 to tie the score at 1-all. It was Perlow's 17th goal of the season.

Orlando tallied his goal, and his ninth of the year, at 10:12 for a 2-1 Ursinus lead. Washington would then score the next two as Kielek scored at 5:08 in the first, followed by a goal from freshman midfielder Tom Rixey at 9:22 left in the second for a 3-2 Washington lead.

Ursinus then scored an extra-man goal at 7:02 as Kraus scored his third goal of the season on an assist from Bean to tie the score at 3-all. Washington took a 4-3 lead into halftime as Kielek scored his 17th goal of the season with just ten seconds left on a Rixey assist.

Just 1:24 into the third quarter, junior attack Brendan O'Leary scored his 17th goal of the season on an assist by Kielek for a 5-3 lead. Ursinus would tie the score at 5-all heading into the fourth as Gillen scored his seventh goal of the season on an assist by Farris with 8:02 left in the third to cut the deficit to one. Nagle would tie the score at 5-all with 2:18 left in the third on an assist by Bean.

Ursinus, who was 25-for-26 on clears, got 15 saves from senior goalkeeper Tony Aquilino (Abington, PA/Archbishop Wood). Washington senior goalkeeper Gordon Cohen made 13 saves in 59:48 of work. Defensively, Aquilino had seven groundballs, while Orlando and Mangin each had fourth. Mangin had four caused turnovers, with Aquilino causing two.

Ursinus heads to McDaniel on Saturday.

COLLEGEVILLE, PA -- Senior midfielder Casey O'Connor (Crownsville, MD/Archbishop Spalding) scored the only two goals of the fourth-quarter to give eighth-ranked Washington College a 7-5 Centennial Conference men's lacrosse victory over host Ursinus College this afternoon in Collegeville, PA. The Shoremen improved to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play with the win, while the Bears fell to 3-4 and 1-1 with the loss.

Ursinus got on the board first when Dan Monzo scored off an assist from Derrin Mangin with 12:52 left in the first quarter. The Shoremen quickly tied things up with a goal by sophomore attackman Josh Perlow (Owings Mills, MD/Boys Latin) with 11:26 remaining, but the Bears regained the lead on a Jason Orlando goal with 10:12 to play in the first quarter. Washington evened the score again with 5:08 left in the period when senior attackman Jimmy Kielek (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) fired in a goal.
