Washington & Jefferson Hangs on to Down Wittenberg

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio Washington & Jefferson jumped out to a 7-1 lead and hung on for a 12-10 women's lacrosse victory over Wittenberg on Wednesday evening.

The Presidents (2-3), who lost to the Tigers last year at home by a 13-8 margin, earned the first road win in the program's two-year history. Last year, W&J defeated Trine away from Alexandre Stadium, but that game was played on a neutral field in Medina, Ohio.

Sophomore Courtney Schrock (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West) and Brittany Oake (Bell Mead, N.J./Montgomery) spearheaded W&J's early run with two goals as the Presidents opened a 7-1 advantage after 18 minutes of play.

Wittenberg (1-1) narrowed the gap to 7-3, but senior Laura Peery (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) scored four minutes before halftime for an 8-3 lead after 30 minutes.

The two squads traded goals early in the second half, but Wittenberg strung together four of the next five scores to trim its deficit to 10-8 with 11:53 remaining.

Schrock stopped the rally with a goal at the 6:49 mark and Peery added an insurance goal with 3:36 left.

Schrock led the Presidents with a four-goal effort, while Oake added three goals. Peery netted a pair of goals and senior Valerie Orzechowski (Erie, Pa./McDowell), sophomore Shannon Rainey (Severna Park, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and freshman Joanne Chojecki (Lake View, N.Y./Frontier Senior) all collected one goal.

Sophomore goalie Amber Kuntz (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) made 10 saves. The Presidents were outshot by a 21-20 margin. '

Eight different Tigers scored goals in the loss. Jenny Schaafsma suffered the loss after making three first-half saves.

W&J looks to continue its winning ways in Ohio on Saturday when traveling to Kenyon for a 1:00 pm contest.
