No. 19 Mary Washington Falls to No. 17 St. Mary's

Senior All-America midfielder Lauren Carrier scored five goals and added a pair of assists to lead the 17th ranked St. Mary's College women's lacrosse team to a 14-11 victory at #19 Mary Washington on Thursday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference action at a rainy Battleground Complex. The Eagles fall to 7-4 overall, and 3-1 in CAC play, while the Seahawks improve to 9-2 and 4-0.

In a back-and-forth game in which the largest margin either team held was the three goal difference at the final horn, the teams traded goals with neither team leading by more than one until UMW took a 6-4 lead with 12:47 left in the first half on a goal by Katie Wallis. The Eagles led, 7-5, with 7:18 left in the half on a goal by junior Brittany Butler, but the Seahawks scored the final two goals of the half, including one as the first half time expired, to knot the score at seven at intermission.

After the Eagles gained an 8-7 advantage to open the second on an Allie Kimmelman score, the Seahawks scored four straight to lead 11-8 with 17:53 remaining in the game. UMW's Catherine Kennedy netted a pair of goals to cut the deficit to one at 11-10, but Carrier responded by scoring 12 seconds after Kennedy's second tally to resume a two-goal advantage. Kimmelman scored with 4:43 to go, but SMC's Allie Zerhusen regained a two-goal margin 30 seconds later, and Nikki Yesalavage netted the game's final goal with 3:12 to play.

Kennedy scored four goals to lead Mary Washington, while Katie Wallis scored three goals with one assist and Kimmelman added two scores and one assist. SMC was led by Carrier's five goals and two helpers.

The Eagles edged SMC in shots, 27-26, but after scoring five goals on their first seven shots, the Eagles were thwarted by SMC goalkeeper Colleen Simpson, who made 11 saves, including nine in the second half. UMW keeper Danni Guigli had six saves.

The Eagles will visit Stevenson University on Saturday in another CAC contest at noon.
