Freshman Leads No. 2 Maryland by No. 18 James Madison

HARRISONBURG, Va., March 27, 2009 -- Maryland freshman Karri Ellen Johnson (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) scored six goals and added two assists to lead the second-ranked Terrapins to a 17-7 victory over number 18 James Madison Friday night at the JMU Lacrosse Complex.

The Terps remained unbeaten as Maryland raised its record to 10-0. Maryland entered the game ranked number two in both the Inside Lacrosse media poll and IWLCA coaches poll. JMU, which is ranked 19th by Inside Lacrosse and 18th by the IWLCA, dropped to 4-5. The Dukes lost their fourth straight game. All four of the defeats were to top-20 opponents.

Maryland scored on four of its first five shots as the Terps jumped out to a 4-0 lead with 23:46 left in the opening period. The Dukes answered back with a free-position score by redshirt junior Kim Griffin (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) and a goal by freshman Caitlin McHugh (Westminster, Md./Mercy), assisted by senior Jaime Dardine (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown). That closed the gap to 4-2 at the 15:54 mark.

However, Maryland ran off a string of seven straight goals, including four by Johnson and a fifth assisted by Johnson, to pull ahead 11-2 with 2:05 left in the half. A scored by JMU's Dardine with 1:01 remaining left the Terps with an 11-3 halftime advantage. Maryland outscored JMU 6-4 in the second period.

In addition to Johnson, Maryland got two goals each from sophomore Brandi Jones (Poway, Calif./Poway), junior Amanda Spinnenweber (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) and redshirt junior Brittany Jones (Poway, Calif./Poway). Junior Caitlyn McFadden (Phoenix, Md./Notre Dame Prep) finished the match with five assists. JMU's attack was led by Griffin with two goals and two assists and Dardine with two goals and one assist.

JMU's starter in goal, redshirt freshman goalkeeper Alex Menghetti (Media, Pa./Penncrest), made six saves in 48:17 of playing time. Junior goalkeeper Morgan Kelly (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) played the final 11:43 and had one save.< b! ! r> Maryland's starting goalkeeper, freshman Brittany Dipper (Woodbury, N.J./Kingsway Regional), had five saves and played 52:57. Senior goalkeeper Lynne Cooper (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and freshman goalkeeper Mary Jordan (Davidsonville, Md./St. Mary's) split the final 7:03 and each came up with one save.

HARRISONBURG, Va. - After netting five goals in a defeat of Towson on Tuesday, freshman Karri Ellen Johnson scored a career-high six scores and eight points to lead the No. 2 Maryland women's lacrosse team past No. 18 James Madison, 17-7, on Friday at the JMU Soccer/Lacrosse Complex.

Maryland (10-0, 3-0 ACC) started the game with four unanswered goals via Caitlyn McFadden, Laura Merrifield, Johnson and Brandi Jones. JMU responded with two goals before Maryland went on a devastating 7-0 run, highlighted by four goals from Johnson, to close out the first half with a commanding 11-3 Maryland lead.

Sarah Mollison and Brittany Jones opened the second half with two more Terrapin scores before the Dukes cut the lead to eight with a pair of goals around the 19-minute mark. McFadden led the way with three of her game-high five assists to aid in three of Maryland's four scores in the last 16 minutes to clinch the Terps' 10th win of the 2009 campaign.

Maryland outshot JMU by 10 while Terp goalie Brittany Dipper captured the win with five saves.

"We played well...we executed on the offensive end and played smart defensively," head coach Cathy Reese said. "We forced a lot of turnovers tonight and were able to turn them into goals tonight."
