Washington & Jefferson Falls at Kenyon

GAMBIER, Ohio - Margaret Sherwood scored five goals, including four in the first 14 minutes, to help Kenyon record a 14-7 women's lacrosse victory over Washington & Jefferson on Saturday afternoon.

The Ladies (5-1) jumped out to a 5-0 lead midway through the first half and the Presidents (2-4) could only bring the lead down to four goals the rest of the way.

Sherwood netted the first three goals of the game and then added her fourth at the 16:27 mark for a 5-0 advantage. Sophomore Shannon Rainey (Severna Park, Md./Archbishop Spalding) stopped the KC spurt with a goal at the 13:30 mark, but the Ladies answered with two goals 53 seconds apart and took a 7-2 lead into halftime.

Senior Laura Peery (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) narrowed W&J's deficit to 8-4 six minutes into the second half, but Alicia Florin and Sherwood followed with Kenyon goals to bring the lead back to 10-4. KC scored four of the final six goals to seal the win.

Joy Leaman added three goals for Kenyon, while Riley Roche and Isabel Plourde collected two-goal games. Chase Kreuter played the first 50 minutes in goal and made eight saves.

Kenyon used a 31-29 shot advantage and converted on 6-of-7 free-position shots.

Washington & Jefferson sophomore Courtney Schrock's (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West) two goals. Rainey, Peery, senior Valerie Orzechowski (Erie, Pa./McDowell), sophomore Shannon Wagner (Venetia, Pa./Peters Twp.) and freshman Brittany Oake (Bell Mead, N.J./Montgomery) all scored one goal. Rainey also dished out one assist.

Sophomore goalie Amber Kuntz (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) took the loss after stopping six shots.

W&J has concluded its four-game road swing and returns to Alexandre Stadium on Wednesday when it hosts Allegheny for a 7:00 pm match.
