McDaniel Starts Fast, Defeats Ursinus in Centennial Play

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Gibbs Preston (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) scored three goals and added five assists to lead McDaniel to a 13-5 victory over Ursinus in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday.

Mike Hatton (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) added a hat trick of his own for the Green Terror (6-2, 1-1 CC), who built a 6-1 lead through the first 27:27 of the game.

Pat Gillen scored twice for the Bears (3-5, 1-2 CC), who scored three times as a team in a 5-minute, 31-second span to close to within 10-5.

Two Preston assists – one to DJ Rickels (Forest Hill, Md./Boys Latin School of Maryland) and one to Nicholas DiBernardo (Towson, Md./Calvert Hall) – staked McDaniel to a 2-0 lead with 6:22 to play in the first quarter.

Dan Monzo sliced the deficit in half at the 6:08 mark before the Green Terror reeled off four straight goals.

Preston had a goal and two assists during the stretch while Bill Warner (Yardley, Pa./LaSalle) contributed a goal and an assist.

Gillen closed the deficit to 6-2 with 29 seconds remaining in the first half before McDaniel put together a 4-0 third quarter to open a 10-2 lead entering the final period.

Hatton had two goals in the quarter while Deane Mellor (Chadds Ford, Pa./Wilminton Friends School) added a goal and an assist.

Goals from Eric Ferris, Gillen and Jason Orlando pulled the visitors within five but two Preston goals 2:59 apart bookended a 3-0 burst to close the game.

McDaniel returns to action at home against Whittier on Wednesday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.

WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel darted out to a 6-1 lead with 2:33 left in the second quarter and never looked back as the Green Terror (6-2, 1-1 Centennial) defeated Ursinus (3-5, 1-2 Centennial) 13-5 Saturday afternoon in men's lacrosse action.

Ursinus trailed 2-0 with 6:22 left in the first quarter, before getting on the board when junior attack Dan Monzo (Collegeville, PA/Spring-Ford) scored with 6:08 left in the first on an assist from sophomore midfielder Matt Angle (Manchester, MD/North Carroll).

Ursinus got on the board one more time in the first half, scoring with 29 ticks left in the second quarter when sophomore midfielder Pat Gillen (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) scored unassisted to cut the deficit to 6-2.

McDaniel scored all four goals in the third quarter to go up 10-2. Ursinus made one final run in the fourth, scoring three straight goals to get within 10-5.

The first goal came at 10:33 as junior attack Eric Farris (Pottsgrove, PA/Pottsgrove) scored on an assist from junior attack Pat Nagle (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville). The next goal came at 7:54, as Gillen scored his second of the day unassisted. Finally, senior attack Jason Orlando (Morton, PA/Springfield) scored at 5:02, for the final Ursinus score of the afternoon.

Defensively, sophomore midfielder Reilly Hannapel (Stillwell, KS/Rockhurst Jesuit) had four groundballs, with senior goalkeeper Tony Aquilino (Abington, PA/Archbishop Wood) grabbing three.

Aquilino finished with four saves on the afternoon for Ursinus, who will host F&M Wednesday night at 8.
