Captains Sink Shenandoah in USA South Match
WINCHESTER, Va. - Pre-season USA South Conference favorite Christopher Newport allowed the game's first goal Saturday afternoon, but used a pair of seven-goal runs to key a 21-5 women's lacrosse victory over host Shenandoah.
Shenandoah (1-7, 0-2 USA South) got a Jessie Kuykendall goal off of a Jennie Ott assist just 21 seconds into the game, but CNU (5-2, 3-0) answered with its first run to take control of the contest.
After Kuykendall snapped this string with her unassisted tally at 18:43, the Captains reeled off another seven unanswered to take a 14-2 lead with just over 3:30 remaining in the first half.
Hornets sophomore Paola Aguilar then completed the first-half scoring by going coast-to-coast at the 2:10 mark.
CNU erased any thoughts of a Shenandoah comeback with two goals in the first 10 minutes of the second; Clarissa Mulligan scored an unassisted goal at 18:57 to break up a third seven-goal run of the game for the visitors.
SU keeper Danielle Lawson made six saves in the losing effort. The Captains outshot Shenandoah 43-12, won 18 of 27 draw controls and scooped up 19 of the game's 29 groundballs.
