Wilmington Topples Dominincan in High-Scoring Match
NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University defeated the visiting Chargers of Dominican College, 22-14 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at the Kirkwood Complex.
Wilmington took a 6-1 lead over the first eight minutes, but Dominican answered back with three straight goals over the next five minutes to cut the lead to 6-4. The two teams kept it close, and after two goals by Dominican's Silje Karlsen that cut Wilmington's lead down to 10-8, the Wildcats' Kelly Wojciechowski netted three goals over the last six minutes and sent the 'Cats into the break holding a 13-8 lead.
Dominican got within four (18-14) with 14:15 remaining in the game, but that would be as close as the Chargers would get, as Wilmington tallied the last four goals of the game and pulled away for the 22-14 victory.
The Wildcats were led by senior Kelly Wojciechowski, who netted a game-high six goals and dished out four assists. Freshman Kory Webster added four goals, while classmate Jessica Graybeal chipped in with a hat trick and two assists. Freshmen Mary Sing and Rebecca Guethler each added three goals, while Sing also had two assists. Sophomore Danielle Niccoli (2 goals) and junior Britany Shaner (1 goal) rounded out the scoring for the hosts.
The Chargers were led by Aubree Williams' six goals and one assist. Ashley Ordemann netted four goals, while Amanda Matos tallied a pair of goals. Silje Karlsen and Sarah Kiernan each added single goals for Dominican.
Wilmington's Amber Smith notched 17 saves in goal, as she picked up the win. Dominican's Lindsey Grundfast recorded 16 saves in net .
With the win, Wilmington improved to 2-3 in the CACC and 4-5 overall, while Dominican dropped to 0-3 in the conference and 4-4on the season. The Wildcats return to the field on Monday evening, when they play host to the Bison of Howard University in a non-conference game beginning at 3:00 PM.
